Maltipoos (a mix between a Miniature or Toy Poodle and a Maltese) are a popular breed due to their absolute adorableness and extreme cuddliness. These pups make excellent pets for adults and children alike, as they’re small, friendly, and playful. So, if you’ve just adopted a Maltipoo, then congratulations! You’re in for a world of fun.

However, having a newly adopted dog in the home means you might have questions about how to care for them properly. Feeding a Maltipoo is a vital aspect of caring for these dogs that you need to know. So, how do you feed a Maltipoo? How often should a Maltipoo puppy eat? We have all the answers you need below!

What Should I Feed a Maltipoo?

Like all canines, the Maltipoo requires a balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs. This helps to ensure their teeth stay strong, their coats remain shiny, and their immune and digestive systems work as they should. When choosing a dog food for your pup, you want it to contain all the nutrients they need and be approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).  If approved by the AAFCO, it should have a “Nutritional Adequacy Statement.”

But what are a Maltipoo’s nutritional needs? Any food you get for your dog should contain:

  • Protein: This helps your pup’s muscles and organs develop as they should.
  • Carbohydrates: They give your Maltipoo all the energy they need to run and play. Stick to complex carbs, though, such as whole grains, and ensure a food has plenty of fiber from veggies and fruits. This will help your pet feel full longer and keep their digestive system working smoothly.
  • Healthy fats: These aid in keeping a dog’s coat healthy. You want to watch how much overall fat a Maltipoo eats because these pups can be prone to becoming overweight. But healthy fats, like omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, are essential.
  • Minerals and vitamins: These are essential for your puppy’s growth and all bodily functions.

A dog food designed explicitly for small breeds should offer your Maltipoo the nutrition they need.  Look for foods created for specific life stages as well, as puppies require more calories and other essentials than an adult or senior dog.

How Much Should I Feed a Maltipoo?

How much a Maltipoo should be fed depends greatly on their age, level of activity, and health.  It also depends hugely on the food they are being fed.  The fact that this is a small breed that can be prone to weight gain should also be taken into account. You should be able to locate guidelines for feeding your pup on the container of any dog food you purchase for your pet.

However, the surefire way to know just how much to feed your Maltipoo is to talk with a vet. They will have a better idea of how much food your pup requires, as they’ll be aware of your pet’s caloric needs and health. A vet will be able to offer you nutritional advice specifically tailored to your Maltipoo’s unique needs.  They will also be able to recommend high-quality diet choices for your pup.

How Often Should I Feed a Maltipoo?

How often should a Maltipoo be fed? First, don’t free-feed one of these dogs! Again, they can be prone to weight gain, which can lead to health issues. Instead, you’ll want to feed your pup a few small meals a day, but the exact number of meals depends on their age.. These dogs have small stomachs that can’t hold a ton of food, so they need multiple meals, especially during puppyhood, to grow as they should.

Speaking to a vet about how often to feed a Maltipoo is advisable, but there are some general guidelines:

  • 8 to 12 weeks: 4 times a day
  • 3 to 9 months: 3 times a day
  • 9 months and older: 2 times a day

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I switch my Maltipoo from one food to another?

If you need to switch your dog’s food, say when they go from puppy food to junior or adult food, you need to do so slowly. Simply feeding your pup one food one day and a different one the next will most likely make them sick. Instead, feed your dog the old food but replace a quarter of it with the new food. Then, feed them half old food, half new, before moving to a quarter old and the rest new. Finally, switch entirely to the new food.  This transition should take 7-10 days.

Can I feed my Maltipoo human food?

Though human food isn’t something a Maltipoo (or any dog) needs, certain human foods can be used as an occasional treat. However, some human foods are unhealthy or downright toxic to dogs, so never feed your pet something until you’ve thoroughly researched it!  Some common human foods that should be avoided at all costs are grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, candies and chocolates.

Can I give my Maltipoo dog treats?

Absolutely! Just give them sparingly and aim for a low-calorie, healthier dog treat for your pup. Treats should not replace a standard meal. Keep a close eye on your dog’s weight by carrying out a Body Condition Score once every few weeks.  If you feel your dog is gaining weight, you can reduce the number of treats they get to try and correct this.

Final Thoughts

Properly feeding a Maltipoo isn’t difficult once you know what to feed them, how often, and how much to give. Your pup should be good to go as long as you’re feeding them the correct quantity of healthy, well-balanced dog food that meets their nutritional needs. You can also throw in the occasional treat for your dog, which they’ll surely love!
