Dog Owner's Manual › Chapter 7: Dog Growth & Development › Calculating Age in "Dog Years" ›Calculating Age in Dog Years
A popular misconception is that dogs age 7 years for each calendar year. In fact, canine aging is much more rapid during the first 2 years of a dog’s life. After the first 2 years the ratio settles down to 5 to 1 for small and medium breeds. For large breeds the rate is 6 to 1, and for giant breeds the rate is 7 to 1. Thus, at 10 years of age a Great Dane would be 80 years old while a pug would only be 64. ![]() Chapter 7: Dog Growth & Development
Comments for This Page (38) | Post a CommentNice chart- this is very helpful...thanks fur the updatse, Dogster!!! =) On July 4th of this year my Dexter would have been 19 years old in our age or 129 in dog years , but on June 16th our family will gather togetheras he makes is journey from this world to the next to wait for me there. Wow! Thanks Dogster! That means that my dogs are between the ages of 16 and 87! Tomorrow is Sebastian birthday... he will be 16!!! and he will have his "first year" cake in human's years... WOW! Way cool. I have one older than me, one the same age, and 2 younger! Cool. This has helped us! We'd always heard about the 7:1 ratio, and had even heard of 10:1 on the first year then 7:1 each additional year. I personally think Dogster knows what they're talking--oops--barking about. Keep up the good work! We Love Dogster! No wonder Skooter has been a pill lately. She's 16 in human years! My little "teenager"! This was helpful & fun! Oh wow. My little Gabby is 14 years old in dog years. Well, lucky for me she's small and she ages the slowest. Lol. She'll always be my baby girl. Thanks Dogster! This will be way better for charting down dogg-year ages! We love you, Dogster!~ GREAT way to calculate dog age, but it would be even more helpful if the SMALL, MEDIUM, and LARGE categories were more precisely delineated by weight . Just a thought... Thanks Dogster! My JRTs are 20 and 34 yrs old already! I can't bear the thought of losing them! Anyways, aside from the chart, calculating a dog's age is also dependent on several factors such as their environment, diet, weight, several health issues, etc. Wow, so simple! great, quick, easy, whats not to like?! athough i do agree with catherine slightly! Thanks dogster! i will be printing this out to keep! Good info, glad it's been updated, after all these year's. Thank's for sharing, very interesting. Oh goodie- this means that my Little boy is the same age as me! Does this mean I can take him out for drinks with the girls? Heehee. I like the chart as it seems a bit more accurate, the problem I have is figuring out whether or not my 100 lb. dog is L or XL, or my 50 lb. dog is M or L. My 100 lb dog is 10 years old and the difference between L and XL is significant. Can you offer a little more guidance in size? I love this chart!! Although I don't like it that in February my baby will be older than me according to the chart! My baby is growing up so fast! I am a boxer weighing in at 84 lbs....so I say I am a large breed as opposed to the "Giant Breeds" which would be extra-large. So I am now 5 human years old which makes me 42 dog years.....when I turn 6 human years in July I will then be 48 dog years - Great tool Dogster!!!!! I can't believe that my little Rita is 54. Tiger is about 42, but will catch up to Rita because of her size. Its amazing! My baby is going to be 29 a week from today!!! Thanks Dogster!!! Cool! I appreciate this insight. Was very helpful to me, I have one senior dog and 1 3 yr old dog and this helps put things in perspective. Thank you! this is really great!!!! thanks for everything dogster! This is a very helpful comment! I swear! It helped me a lot! :) haha, I have a teenager...lol my roxie is a teenager,, Post a Comment for This Page

I love the wheel chart to calculate a dog's age. Much better than the old 7-1 ratio you always hear about.
