After his own illness, Brad Hoop decided that once he got through his cancer treatments, he was going to get a dog and give others the chance to be helped.
Guide dogs get extensive training for five to nine months, depending on the organization, to succeed with these tasks. Their guidance helps visually impaired or blind people go to work, navigate busy airports, avoid traffic and many other unexpected obstacles.
Service members can’t bring their dogs with them when they are deployed, and if they don’t have family or friends to watch the dog for their extended time away, they typically have to surrender the dog to a shelter.
