Nonpaying customer – A dog catches a Portland bus with no human companion in sight

Officials are looking for the owner of a friendly, brown-eyed dog with no identification that wandered on to a No. 12 bus Monday afternoon. The dog boarded the bus the same time as a passenger did — about 2:30 p.m. at Northeast 168th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard, according to TriMet spokesman Bruce Solberg.

Pets are not allowed on TriMet unless they are in a carrier or are service animals for disabled passengers. When the bus driver asked the man if the dog was a service animal, the man said the dog wasn’t his.

The dog was well-behaved, Solberg said. After reporting the situation, the driver allowed the dog to ride to the Gresham Transit Center, where a Portland Police Bureau officer picked him up and took him to the Oregon Humane Society, which then turned him over to Multnomah County Animal Services.

At the humane society, the staff nicknamed the dog “Buster,” spokesman David Lytle said.

Buster is a short-haired young pit bull mix, predominantly light brown in color with white markings on his chest and muzzle. He is friendly to strangers and likes chew toys.

“He’s kind of shy, but he’s been through a weird day,” Lytle said.
