Helen Fazio and her lovely Shih Tzu boy Raja are world travelers, longtime Dogster members and gracious contributors to our Dog Tip of the Day blog and newsletter. And now they’re co-authors of a lovely new illustrated book for history buffs and dog lovers alike, The Journey of the Shih Tzu.
The book tracks the breed’s history from their Mongolian wolf origins to their lives as diplomats under the roofs of royal households. It weaves a tale of survival that spans continents, as only very few ancestors of today’s modern dogs managed to escape China’s wars of the 1900s to thrive in happy homes in other parts of the world.
Helen and Raja’s historical hardcover book is beautifully illustrated with Himalayan and Asian art and features pictures of several Dogster members! In fact, Helen says her time spent in the Dogster groups and forums helped shape the book:
“Through being on Dogster, I discovered that indeed the Shih Tzu is among the top ten favorite breeds in the US, but people – most people – don’t actually know their amazing and dramatic history. So, for the love of the breed, I wrote a beautiful and also playful book about it.”
We’re also giving away a copy of the book to three lucky Dogsters, so leave a comment to be considered for the prize (and don’t forget to include your real e-mail address so we can contact you if you win). We’ll draw the winners randomly on Friday, Dec. 17.
