Kurgo Wander Hammock – A Quick Look

Kurgo Wander Hammock - top angle

Pros

  • Waterproof
  • Stain-resistant
  • Can accommodate a human passenger
  • Anchors to keep it in place

Cons

  • Can unzip easily
  • Doesn’t fit SUVs or large trucks
  • Some users say it isn’t durable

Specifications

Fit Type:Fits most standard vehicles
Brand:Kurgo
Dimensions:55” W x 56” L
Color:Black; charcoal gray
Material:Polyester, PVC
Auto Part Position:Rear

Material

The Kurgo Wander Hammock is made from 600-denier polyester fabric with a PVC backing. It is waterproof, stain resistant, and made with heavy stitched seams. It also contains zippers and anchors to help hold it in place in your car’s backseat.

However, one of the most common complaints among users is that the fabric is not super durable. Some reviewers say that it is good additionally, but the fabric wears down over time, especially after being washed. The manufacturer’s instructions say to hand wash or spot clean only, so it could be that the washing instructions are not being followed carefully.

Other users say that the fabric punctured easily, even after not having it for very long. So if you have a dog with sharp nails or teeth, or a particularly destructive dog, it may not hold up as well.

Coverage

What we really love about this particular hammock is that it covers the total of your back seat for most standard sized car models. Whether you have multiple dogs, one very large dog, or all in between, it makes sure to protect your seats and fit in the back seat efficiently to protect and shelter both your dog and your fabrics.

It even has a center zipper so that a human passenger can sit in the backseat safely while the rest of the seat is still covered, and you could put something like a baby’s car seat back there as well.

However, if you have a bigger vehicle, like a truck or a large SUV, the standard size of this hammock may not cover the entire backseat. Kurgo does offer an extended, larger version of this same hammock, though. The Extended Width Wander Hammock is 63” W x 56” L, so it should fit the backseat of larger vehicles.

Cleanability

The polyester and PVC material should be fairly easy to clean, but the cleaning instructions for this hammock are different based on what retailer you buy the product from.

The Kurgo website says that it is best to hand wash or spot clean this product, while Amazon says that it is machine washable. Many people that claimed the product wasn’t super durable after a couple of washes may have tried to machine-wash the hammock. We recommend following Kurgo’s instructions to hand wash or spot clean the hammock for best results.

The good news is that the hammock is waterproof and stain resistant, so it shouldn’t need cleaning too often, especially if you don’t use it a lot.

Durability

The leading complaint about the product is that it doesn’t last very long. Some users say that it fell apart easily, while others say that it punctured easily, either by their dogs or by the components of their vehicle.

The good news is that Kurgo seems to take complaints very seriously. And while they don’t offer a warranty due to user error, they do offer a lifetime warranty due to poor craftsmanship or manufacturer defects.

Tools

No tools are required to set up this hammock. It simply secures with the latches and buckles that already exist in the car. You can easily attach your dog safety harness, seat belts, child seats, and anything else in the vehicle with the spaces, pockets, and slits.

What the Users Say

We looked and looked at user reviews! Some people say that the product is very durable and holds up well for their dogs. Some people didn't rave about it being anything particularly spectacular, but it's definitely functional and able to get the job done.

Other folks complained a little about the material because they felt like it was too thin and didn’t hold up well after cleaning. However, by following the care instructions and hand washing it or spot cleaning it only, it should hold up well just fine. But if you have a particularly destructive dog or multiple dogs, it may not be as durable.

Overall, we think users are happy with this product and we would certainly recommend it to you!

Conclusion

We loved the Kurgo Wander Hammock overall. While there are some complaints about the durability, we think that it is effective and worthwhile. It is fantastic for multiple dogs, large dogs, and all in between. You can also put in child safety seats or have a passenger safely buckled while you are traveling.

We have no major complaints about the design at all and think it would work well in virtually any standard sized vehicle, but they also have a larger version for bigger vehicles. If you have been looking for a hammock-style design for your backseat, it is certainly a notable option to consider.
