If you have suffered the loss of one of your furry loved one’s and you suspect he or she was a victim of the tainted foods from Menu Pet or one of the other food manufacturers, here’s a way to find out for sure.

For more information, follow this link to the Iowa State University announcement.

On March 16, 2007, a number of pet food manufacturers recalled several brands of canned and pouched cat and dog foods following reports of animals developing kidney failure after eating those foods. The underlying cause of the kidney failure has not been determined and investigations are continuing. Up-to-date information is available at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website:

If you have been feeding your cat or dog products on the recall list (see websites listed below), stop using the suspected products immediately and consult your local veterinarian. Clinical signs of kidney failure in cats and dogs may include mild to severe anorexia, lethargy, vomiting and increased thirst and urination.

Veterinary toxicologists at the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory can examine tissues from animals that have died to determine possible cause of death, and analyze pet food to determine if toxins are present. Samples must be submitted by your veterinarian who can send them to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Test results and charges will be sent to your veterinarian.

Should your veterinarian have questions, he or she should feel free to contact Dr Steve Ensley, Dr Gary Osweiler or any of the diagnostic pathologists at the Iowa State University Diagnostic Laboratory at 515-294-1950
