yorkshire dog being groomed

As dog parents, we know the struggle of finding a grooming service that provides what we need and doesn’t cost a significant amount of money—the search for the perfect place can take eons! However, if you have a Pet Supplies Plus located near you, you might want to give it a look. While it only grooms dogs, it offers a wide variety of services to keep your pup looking their best.

The cost of the services will vary depending on a few variables. But overall, the prices are reasonable, and Pet Supplies Plus even offers a self-wash where you can handle your pup yourself! Here’s a quick look at the cost of grooming your dog at Pet Supplies Plus.

The Importance of Grooming

Getting your dog groomed regularly offers more benefits than just keeping hair out of their eyes or making sure they don’t stink. With proper, regular grooming, you’re also getting rid of fleas, ticks, and other pests you don’t want to hang around. Plus, you’ll be helping your dog to shed less—always a bonus!

Regular grooming done right can help identify illness or disease in your dog of which you might not be aware. It can find skin lesions, rashes, lumps under the skin, and more. Proper grooming can even help your pet’s joints, as overly long toenails can lead to out-of-alignment paw pads, leading to joint and tendon pain!

How Much Does Pet Supplies Plus Grooming Cost?

Pet Supplies Plus’s grooming services will vary in cost depending on several factors. One is where you live; as the table shows, the East and West Coasts tend to be pricier than the South and Midwest.

Another variable will be the type of dog you have. If you have a small breed, you are looking at a lower price for services. Likewise, a large breed can cost up to $30 more for the same service. The kind of coat your pet has also factors in, as some types of hair are more difficult to deal with than others.

Luckily, the puppy packages and self-wash station costs seem to be the same no matter where you go or what breed you have and are reasonably priced.

Our Favorite Products

Selecting the right shampoo and conditioner makes the world of a difference when grooming your pup. Our favorite products are the duo by Hepper. The Oatmeal Pet Shampoo is formulated with aloe and oatmeal to soothe skin and hydrate the coat. The Pet Conditioner works at eliminating tangles and taming frizz and static. Both products are pH-balanced and formulated with pet-friendly ingredients, free of harsh soaps, chemicals, and dyes. Give this duo a try to heal and nourish your dog's coat, and leave them with an irresistible just-left-the-spa cucumber and aloe scent.

    Additional Costs to Anticipate

Pet Supplies Plus doesn’t just offer the services listed in the table. Overall, it has approximately 25 add-on services you can choose from. These include VIP packages, de-shedding, spa treatments, teeth brushing, flea treatments, and much more!

The prices for these seem to be the same across the board, no matter your location, the kind of dog you’re bringing in, or the type of coat they have. Add-on packages range from $15 to $30, while individual add-on treatments range from $2 to $20.

Add-ons are, of course, optional, so you’re under no requirement to get any of them. But if you feel like your dog deserves to be pampered or you’re desperate to resolve a flea problem or get dry skin under control, you can find something that suits you!

How Often Should I Groom My Dog?

How often your dog should be groomed will vary, as it depends on the breed, the kind of coat they have, and how dirty they tend to get. It also depends on what you asked the groomer to do the last time that you got your pet groomed. After all, if you got your pup a buzz cut, they likely won’t need another haircut for a few months. Considering all this, you could be getting your dog groomed anywhere between every 6 weeks to every 4 months.

If you are unsure how often your pup should be groomed, talk to your vet and groomer to find out what they recommend.

    Does Pet Insurance Cover Grooming?

Most pet insurance won’t cover grooming, unfortunately. There’s a chance you could get lucky enough to find a company that will, but it isn’t likely. Typically, pet insurance will only cover things like:

    • Illnesses
    • Accidents
    • Vaccines
    • Spaying/Neutering

At most, pet insurance might cover the cost of teeth cleaning or flea/tick treatments. That said, if you have a service or therapy dog, you might want to check to see if exceptions are made for them when it comes to covering the cost of grooming.

What to Do for Your Dog Between Grooming Sessions

Even if you’re taking your dog to be groomed on a regular basis, you can still do at-home grooming in between sessions to keep them clean and happy. Teeth brushing should be a regular thing, as should regular brushing of their coat. Baths can be given when they get dirty and stinky, but don’t bathe them too much, or your pup could end up with dry skin. Ears should be checked once a week and gently cleaned out if needed, while eyes should be checked for discharge frequently. You can even trim your pet’s nails if you’re feeling brave.

    Conclusion

If you have been searching for a groomer with no luck and have a Pet Supplies Plus in your area, we recommend that you check it out. With such a wide range of grooming services and add-ons available, it’s sure to have something that meets your needs. Best of all, it has self-wash stations where you can bathe your dog yourself when you’re in a rush or in between regular grooming sessions!

Its prices are relatively reasonable, even though these do range a bit based on location and dog breed. You’ll need to contact your local store or create an online account to find out the exact prices available to you.
