Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Earthborn Holistic Dog food a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Earthborn Holistic Dog Food has been in business for nearly 100 years, beginning as a company named Midwestern Pet Foods. As a family-owned business starting out in the late 1920s, they put passion into their pet food and love into every recipe. They use real ingredients with optimal dog health in mind by understanding the health needs of cats and dogs while being backed by decades of experience.

Now in its fourth generation, it has progressed from being a mill to having multiple factories across the United States. Earthborn has headquarters and one kitchen in Indiana, and two more kitchens in New York and Oklahoma.

Who makes Earthborn Holistic and where is it produced?

Earthborn Holistic originated in the United States over 100 years ago as a family-owned and operated brand. They have evolved over time to produce quality dog and cat food and expand across the US in three different states.

Which type of dog is Earthborn Holistic best suited for?

This dog food is best suited for dogs of all stages in life. Earthborn Holistic has seven different recipes crafted with a variety of ingredients. There are options for puppy food, grain-free diets, weight control, and even an option crafted for larger breeds. It is affordable even in its largest available size.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

    Natural Ingredients

Earthborn Holistic dog food contains all-natural ingredients and is crafted with quality protein and high quality in mind. It includes only those ingredients that will provide the most nutritious diet. With its 100% satisfaction guarantee, you can be sure that Earthborn crafts its recipes in their own kitchens located in the US. They keep their recipes close to home, obtaining their ingredients from only the best sources and avoiding fillers and artificial colors.

    Superfoods and Vitamins

The available dog food options contain a high number of superfoods, minerals, and vitamins to promote overall wellness. With ingredients like whole protein, omega fatty acids, veggies and fruits, and antioxidants, it is packed with the essential ingredients your dog needs.

    High-Quality Protein

These dog food recipes are curated with protein listed as their main ingredients. The content of protein is at an average of 20% across their recipes and typically consist of turkey, chicken, and whitefish meal. The high quality of protein promotes overall energy levels and the buildup of lean muscle mass.

    Controversial Ingredients

Taurine is an ingredient that you may see advertised as a positive addition to any dog food. This is controversial, however, because many believe that it’s not necessary in every dog’s diet. It can be seen as a “buzzword” plastered on food that doesn’t have true benefits for every dog.

Canola oil and other types of vegetable oils can be controversial as ingredients in dog food because they can sometimes be made from genetically modified sources.

Yeast is an ingredient that should be noted when buying new dog food. There are not any major issues with yeast, and some argue that it’s beneficial for providing nutrients, but others believe it can cause allergies and bloat. However, this may not be an issue for dogs who do not have specific issues with this ingredient.

A Quick Look at Earthborn Holistic Dog Food

    Recall History

Earthborn Holistic has one recorded recall that occurred in 2021. Multiple different recipes of Earthborn were recalled by Midwestern Pet Foods (one of their production sites) in Illinois due to the potential of salmonella contamination. This was discovered through a routine test sampling their produced pet food for both dogs and cats.

    1. I have 4 doxies with a variety of dietary needs due to IBD and colitis. I normally make their food but with the recent adoption of a poodle mix it was very difficult getting her to eat anything. Since adopting her about 3 weeks ago it's the first time she gobbled down her food. I tried a little on the doxies and they also loved it. Roasted rabbit recipe for reference.

      1. Hello Mary Ann,

thank you for sharing this with us! First of all, sorry to hear about your Doxies' health issues. We are glad to hear that you were able to find a good food alternative for all your pups!

    2. Our 5 year old Bernese Mountain Dog was diagnosed with Pancreatitis. She was put on either Royal Canin low fat food or I/D prescription food. She won’t eat them. So we tried Weight Control Chicken Meal & Vegetables Grain-Free Dry Dog Food and she loves it. Is this a healthy option for a large breed dog?

      1. Hello Judy,

Thank you for your message. We're sorry to hear that your Bernese Mountain Dog is struggling with pancreatitis and that she is reluctant to eat the prescription diets. It's completely understandable that you are looking for a food she enjoys, especially when dealing with a medical condition.

For a dog with a diagnosis of pancreatitis, diet is a critical part of her management plan. Unfortunately, we cannot advise you on the specific food option, as we are not veterinarians and cannot make dietary recommendations, particularly for a dog with a pre-existing condition. The best person to reach out to with this issue is your dog's veterinarian as they are familiar with your dog's condition.

        Best wishes!

    3. We have a picky eater and have been through many brands of kibble. It wasn't until someone recommended the Rabbit meal from Earthborn that our dog is no longer turning her nose up at dinner. She loves the dog food, and her allergies have all gone away. So delighted we found Earthborn. I tell all the people at the dog park how well she eats and how all of her allergies have disappeared.
