Do Dogs Dream & What Do They Dream About? Vet-Verified Facts & FAQ

Goldendoodle with beautiful curly golden fur laying down sleepy and tired

Most dog owners have seen their dogs twitch in their sleep and wonder to themselves if they are dreaming. This is a natural question to ask, but what is the answer? Do dogs dream? What do dogs dream about? These are fun questions to ponder on a rainy day or when your dog is taking a particularly restful nap. The truth is that dogs do appear to dream, and your dog’s sleepy twitching is likely a sign that they are in a sleepy dreamland. Beyond that, the details get a little murky. After all, dogs can’t keep dream journals, so there’s no way to know exactly what they dream about. Here is everything we know about dogs and dreaming so you can learn more about your dog’s habits.

Do Dogs Dream?

Yes. Dogs do appear to dream when they sleep. This conclusion has been reached by people across the spectrum. From anecdotal reports of a beloved pet’s dreaming to university researchers and scientists, it has been found that dogs do likely dream. What dogs dream about, whether dogs can remember their dreams, and how much dogs dream have not been settled. But everyone agrees on the fact that dogs do likely dream, which is pretty neat.

What Makes Us Think Dogs Dream?

It is likely that dogs, and other animals, dream based on studying their brain waves. Brain waves of dogs have been examined while they are in a REM sleep cycle. The brain waves change when a dog is dreaming against a baseline. This change in brainwaves is very similar to how human brain waves change while they are dreaming.

While there is no way to know exactly what dogs dream about, researchers have nailed down a pretty good idea. Based on body movements and sometimes sounds that dogs make while sleeping, it’s thought that dogs are dreaming of doing regular doggy things, such as running or chasing something.

So, when you see your dog’s paws twitching in their sleep, they are likely having a dream, and they are likely dreaming about doggy things. You probably aren’t projecting.

How Do Dogs Dream?

Dogs dream after entering rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which typically occurs after about 20 minutes of deep sleep. Dreams can only occur during REM sleep. Dogs spend a lot of time sleeping (50% of the day), but much of this sleep is light sleep or basic resting. REM sleep is a deep sleep characterized by rapid eye movements, rhythmic breathing, and twitching of the extremities. If a dog is not in REM sleep, it will not dream.

What Do Dogs Dream About?

Some people like to say that dogs are chasing squirrels in their sleep. This is because some dogs will twitch their paws and yip while they are sleeping. This is a fun thing to think about, and it could be true, but there is no way to know what a dog is dreaming about. It is likely that some dog somewhere at some time has chased squirrels in their dreams, but it is impossible to say for sure, and it is impossible to know exactly what your dog is dreaming about at any given time.

But experts do speculate that dogs simply dream about their lived experiences. This is similar to how people dream. A dog’s brain is likely processing information from their daily life, which can translate into dreams. That means that dogs could be playing fetch, hiking, or chasing squirrels in their dreams.

The only way that we know what people dream about is because people are able to recall their dreams and then communicate them. Since dogs have no way to communicate in this way, we cannot get any definitive information about dogs’ dreams. Some humans, much less dogs, even have trouble communicating and remembering their dreams. There are no special brain scanners that can show us what dogs dream about, which is why experts can only speculate as to what is going on during a dog’s REM sleep.

Can Dogs Have Nightmares?

Based on a dog’s movements and noises during a dream, it’s assumed that they also have nightmares. Just like with people, not every dream a dog has is a good dream. Some dreams may be bad, and some bad dreams can morph into nightmares.

Some people think it is a good idea to wake their dogs when they are having a nightmare, but it isn’t. Sometimes, dogs can mistake reality for the dream they just woke from, which can cause them to lash out or even bite out of fear. This can obviously be dangerous.

It is also a bad idea to wake dogs up because you are disturbing their important REM sleep. Some dogs only enter REM sleep a couple of times per day (rather than light napping) and breaking this sleep cycle can harm their overall rest.

Conclusion

Dogs do seem to dream. It can be fun to speculate about what dogs dream about, but the ideas people concoct are likely more exciting than the real thing. Dogs likely dream about being a dog and doing things like sniffing about or running around. Dogs can have nightmares, but there’s no evidence to suggest that dogs can remember their dreams, so you can leave them be even if they seem like they are in distress due to a nightmare. The idea that dogs (and other animals) dream is very cool and deepens the bond between man and man’s best friend.
