Bo the Portuguese Water Dog turned 4 years old on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

The adorably furry presidential pup — who gets to call 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. his home address — is still quite the youngster, but his lucky selection as the Obama family dog has launched him on the fast track to doggie success. Bo’s had the honor of meeting Oprah, hanging out with Bettie White, and even getting a Beanie Baby designed in his likeness.

Speaking to David Letterman, First Lady Michelle Obama said that Bo “is the smartest dog on the planet.” Does Obama consider herself a pet parent? Certainly! “He is my son,” she said of the curly-haired dog. “I have two girls and a boy. He’s very well-mannered, he’s very even-tempered. He has a busy schedule, I mean appearances. We’re thinking about getting him an agent.”

Despite all the fame, pomp, and circumstance, Bo is just a puppy at heart. We hope he got some delicious treats on his birthday, and a romp in the grass with Sasha and Malia.

As you would expect, Bo is a very well-trained dog who sits, lies down, and shakes paws demurely. He also doesn’t mind dressing up for the sake of entertaining the people.

Happy birthday, Bo! We wish you a long, happy life!
