Are Dogs Allowed in CVS? 2026 Pet Policy & FAQ

Share

If you are a dog owner, you might be wondering if you can take your pet into the local CVS with you. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t straightforward. The websites for some locations state that you can, while those for other locations say that you cannot. So, are dogs allowed in CVS? The short answer is that it depends on the store’s policy, which can vary depending on where you live. Keep reading as we explain how you can find out about your store’s policy and discuss why some stores may or may not allow pets.

Why Certain CVS Stores Allow Dogs

Many CVS stores allow dogs to be more welcoming to their customers. Owners can keep their pets with them while running errands. This is especially important in areas with a large dog population, like near the beach or tourist destinations.

Why Certain CVS Stores Don’t Allow Dogs

Safety

Some CVS stores forbid dogs because they can risk the safety of other customers. For example, if a dog were to bite another person, the store could face a lawsuit. Customers might also be afraid of the dogs and avoid the store, causing it to lose business.

Allergies

Another reason your local CVS store might choose not to allow dogs is that 15% to 30% of the adult population suffers from allergies to pet dander1, which dogs leave behind when they shed.

Cleanliness

Dog fur can build up around the shelves, making the store look dirty. Dogs can also drool or have accidents, so many CVS stores don’t allow dogs to avoid the extra cleanup work.

Can I Find Out If My CVS Allows Dogs?

If you want to find out if your local CVS allows pets, the best thing to do is call ahead or walk in (without your dog) and ask the manager on duty. You can also check the store’s website and social media pages to find the answer. If you live in a busy area, you might even be able to check review sites like Yelp or Google to see if anyone else mentions being able to bring a pet inside.

What About Service Dogs?

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, you can take your service dog into most public areas, including your local CVS store, so they shouldn’t deny entry. However, it’s vital to ensure that the dog is wearing their designated harness and leash so they are easy for staff and other shoppers to identify. They should also always be well-behaved and under control. Remember, an emotional-support animal is not a service dog and is not guaranteed entry.

What If My CVS Doesn’t Allow Dogs?

If your local CVS doesn’t allow dogs, you must look for other locations with a different policy. There are more than 9,000 stores across the United States, so you likely have more than one nearby, and there is a good chance that one will allow pets.

Summary

Unless you have a service dog, whether your local CVS will allow your dog inside depends on that store’s policy. Checking their website or calling ahead to speak with the manager will help ensure you don’t get into trouble. CVS is more dog-friendly than most other pharmacy chains, but many stores don’t allow pets. Fortunately, there are plenty of stores across the country, so there is a good chance that you can find one where you can take your pet.
