A few months ago we had the sad story of some sick person who tied a dog to a rock in a riverbed in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania, as the tide rose. Fortunately, someone discovered the dog and freed her before she drowned. She had a giant untreated tumor on her foot, and officials suspect someone was trying to “euthanize” her.
A similar thing just happened in Spain, and this time, the dog wasn’t so lucky. On the beach at Huelva someone tied a dog to a rock at low tide. When the tide rose, the dog died, according to a story in the Inquisitr.
If there’s any silver lining to this sad story, it’s this: Police have a suspect in custody. And it happened because a woman, walking along the beach, discovered the dead dog and posted a photo to Facebook, in the hopes the photo would be shared and someone would recognize the dog.
Someone did.
“Within days, tens of thousands of people had seen the picture and one of them recognised the poor dog and called the police,” said a pet owner, according to the Austrian Times.
Police went to investigate and arrested a man in connection with the drowning. They said in their report that the man didn’t have the money to euthanize the dog properly.
“Instead he tied the dog to a rock on the beach and left there to drown when the tide came in,” said a police spokesman.
The woman who posted the photo, Germa Marquez, said she has seen animal cruelty in the area and was angry, according to the the Inquisitr. She posted the photo on her Facebook page (caution: graphic photo) and on the Por Mi Perro Mato! Facebook page.
According to the Inquisitr, one of her comments said: “Today we have many ways to make sure that things like this will not go unpunished. Technology can help in cases like this.”
It can. Let’s hope fear of being caught will prevent any more people from pulling this crap. Instead of “euthanizing” dogs themselves, they should take them to shelters, where at least their companions can get a chance at finding the homes they deserved all along.
