Weruva Dog Food Review 2026: Pros, Cons, Recalls, and Guide

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Weruva food a rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars.

Weruva may sound like an odd name for a pet food brand, but the name was actually inspired by the creators’ cats: Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa. The first syllables of each name were taken and blended to create Weruva, a company that produces nutritious, high-quality food for dogs and cats.

The Weruva tagline is “people food for pets,” and that appears to be evident when you look at the food. You can clearly see pieces of meat that have maintained their appearance and texture. There are even novelty ingredients. Skipjack tuna and calamari make an appearance in the food. These flavors are created to entice pets to eat quality, healthy food.

The company believes that dogs are carnivores and should be fed a diet that reflects that. With that in mind, let’s learn more about this brand.

David and Stacey Foreman created the Weruva brand and named it after their three adopted cats. Once they adopted Baron, their dog, they decided to expand the company to include dog food in the product offerings.

Who Makes Weruva Dog Food and Where Is It Produced?

Weruva pet food is manufactured in facilities in Thailand. These facilities are said to be “human-grade.” The Foremans chose the Thailand facilities to make the food because they adhered to the strict manufacturing standards in place by the brand.

The facilities are USFDA certified, and pet foods made in Thailand are scrutinized more than those made in the United States.

Which Type of Dog Is Weruva Dog Food Best Suited For?

Healthy adult dogs should eat Weruva. While the food is high quality, there aren’t many targeted variations for dogs of different ages, sizes, breeds, and lifestyles. For example, most of the food is geared toward adult dogs, not puppies. Since puppies require different nutrition than adult dogs, they shouldn’t eat this food until they reach adulthood.

There are also no formulas created for dogs with specialized dietary needs. The variation is in the vast array of flavors with interesting names.

Weruva is also not suitable for dogs that need grain in their diets. The formulas are all grain-free, which may not be an option for some dogs. The inclusion of grain in dog food can be highly beneficial. Feeding a grain-free diet to your dog can potentially cause health issues like dilated cardiomyopathy1. These claims are still being investigated by the FDA2, but in the meantime, ask your vet if a grain-free diet is right for your dog before you make the switch.

Our high rating of this food would’ve been higher if the brand was more inclusive to more dogs.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

The ingredients in Weruva dog food are of above-average quality, but the protein and fat aren’t as high as some other brands. The calories are also lower than some other brands, so be sure to check to make sure your dog is meeting their required caloric intake per day.

    Protein

Weruva protein comes from meat and fish ingredients. Real chicken, turkey, lamb, venison, lamb, tuna, and herring are used to give your dog the real meat that they crave and that you can see in the can.

    Salmon Oil

Salmon oil is one of the best things3 in a dog’s diet. It helps give your dog’s coat a softness and glistening shine. It moisturizes their skin. It provides good fat in the form of omega-3 fatty acids. It can even help promote heart and immune system health.

    Eggs

Eggs provide high-quality protein and plenty of nutrients. They are full of vitamins and minerals and are easy to digest. The addition of eggs adds to the protein content while giving dogs another beneficial, healthy ingredient in their food.

A Quick Look at Weruva Dog Food

    Pros
    • Made with high-quality ingredients
    • Visible pieces of meat and vegetables in each can
    • Made in human-grade facilities
    • Manufactured to meet strict standards
    • Wide variety of flavor options
    Cons
    • Only suitable for adult dogs
    • All options are grain-free
    • Lower protein, fat, and calories than some other brands

    Recall History

Weruva has no recall history in the United States. However, there were a few concerns about the Weruva Pet Food BFF line for cats in Australia in 2017. There were reports of cat food having an insufficient level of vitamin B1. Out of caution, they stopped the sale of BFF canned food in Australia. Outside of Australia, the food has not been recalled.

Reviews of the 3 Best Weruva Dog Food Recipes

    1. Weruva Paw Lickin’ Chicken in Gravy Canned Dog Food

Weruva Paw Lickin’ Chicken in Gravy Canned Dog Food

The Paw Lickin’ Chicken in Gravy Canned Dog Food uses boneless, skinless chicken breast that you can see in the gravy. It looks like a can full of shredded chicken. Nothing is in this food except chicken, gravy, water, vitamins, and minerals. It’s a simple meal for your dog but includes the nutrients that they need.

To make this food stretch further, some dog owners like to use it as a topper for different wet foods or mix it with dry food. Small dogs may not like eating the long chicken shreds.

    Pros
    • Simply made with chicken and gravy
    • Can be used as a topper for other foods
    Cons
    • Chicken shreds may be too long for small dogs

    2. Weruva Dogs in the Kitchen Funk in the Trunk Canned Food

Weruva Dogs in the Kitchen Funk in the Trunk With Chicken Breast & Pumpkin Au Jus Canned Dog Food

The Dogs in the Kitchen Funk in the Trunk recipe comes in a 10-ounce can. Depending on how much food your dog needs per meal, this can be helpful or inconvenient. The recipe includes chicken breast and pumpkin in an au jus. It’s then mixed with the nutrients that your dog needs for a balanced meal. Dogs can benefit from pumpkin, especially if they have digestive issues. Included in the food, it’s a convenient way to feed it to your dog without having to add an extra step.

Like other recipes, you can clearly see the chicken and pumpkin in the can. Some dogs don’t care for the texture, which is mushy. Imagine actual chicken breast and pumpkin mixed, and that’s exactly what’s in the can. Other dogs can’t get enough of it, so it depends on what your dog prefers.

    Pros
    • Unique can size may be a perfect single meal for your dog
    • Pumpkin is helpful for digestive health
    Cons
    • Texture can be unappealing to some dogs

    3. Weruva Steak Frites Canned Dog Food

Weruva Steak Frites With Beef, Pumpkin, & Sweet Potatoes in Gravy Canned Dog Food

The Steak Frites With Beef, Pumpkin, & Sweet Potatoes in Gravy recipe includes beef shreds mixed with sweet potatoes and carrots in gravy. This is a heartier meal than some of the other recipes. Some dog owners have noticed that the cans now have less beef than before.

The food is rich and can be used as a food topper in addition to a single meal. Beef lungs and kidneys are included for additional protein and amino acids. Organ meat is a superfood for dogs. Kidneys are high in protein and sources of vitamin B12, iron, niacin, and riboflavin. Organ meat is nutrient-dense and healthy.

    Pros
    • Hearty meal
    • Includes nutrient-dense organ meat
    Cons
    • May be too rich for some dogs

    In Conclusion

Weruva is a high-quality dog food. It’s best for healthy adult dogs that can tolerate a grain-free diet. The ingredients include things that you can see, like real pieces of meat, fish, and vegetables. The brand claims to make its food in human-grade facilities in Thailand, where it’s held to high manufacturing standards.

The food doesn’t include many variants for dogs that are anything other than healthy adults. There are no recipes for puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with specific health concerns.

Before you make the switch to this or any dog food, you should consult your vet to ask about grain-free, grain-inclusive, and specialized foods for your dog.

      1. Hi Beate. You'll be happy to know that Weruva has puppy food options available right now. Just click on the Amazon or Chewy button in the post above to see what selection of flavors is available.

    1. I stumbled upon this dog food accidently, and my dogs both LOVE it! Especially the chicken cans look good enough to feed my husband. I hadn't thought about the grain free attribute, and guess I will add some oatmeal to their breakfast portion. This is now the only brand I buy and my dogs coats are luxurious, the Vet always remarks how healthy they are and how beautiful their coats.

I guess I could buy cheaper products, but they are family and we love them.

      1. Hi Laurie, thank you for your comment! I'm happy to hear that your dogs are doing so well eating Weruva. The fact that they love it and the benefits are so visible speaks volumes about its quality. Your investment is truly paying off. 🙂
