Farmina has many recipes to choose from, including grain-free and low-fiber recipes. Grain-free recipes are not right for every dog, so be sure to check with your vet and see if it’s a suitable option for your dog. The company also makes canned dog food and cat food.

Who Makes Farmina Dog Food and Where Is It Produced?

Farmina is an Italian pet food brand that came to the United States in 2013, so it’s relatively new on the market here, even though the company was founded in 1965. Back then, it was known as the Russo Magimi Company. It focused on animal nutrition but didn’t start making pet food until 1999, when it partnered with the English food company, Farmina.

Farmina has four factories in Brazil, Italy, and two more in Serbia. All the food is manufactured to meet the strict standards of both the European Union and the AAFCO.

Which Type of Dog Is Farmina Dog Food Best Suited For?

Farmina makes recipes for adult, puppy, and senior dogs. You can choose dry or canned food options. Dogs with blood glucose issues may do well on these recipes because they are low glycemic, meaning they won’t spike blood sugar. They’re also made with premium ingredients to aid in digestion, maintain body weight, and keep coats shiny and healthy.

Which Type of Dog Might Do Better With a Different Brand?

Farmina is expensive and may not be available at your local store. If this food isn’t an option for you, the good news is that there are comparable brands out there. American Journey is a healthy alternative to Farmina. Its Salmon, Brown Rice & Vegetables recipe uses real salmon as the first ingredient.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

Farmina uses quality, nutritious ingredients in every recipe. There are no artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors added.

    High-Quality Protein

Farmina uses premium meat and fish in its recipes. These include chicken, duck, lamb, herring, and salmon. The company is also known for adding novelty proteins to its foods. Some recipes include sources like venison, cod, and trout. Dogs that require new protein sources due to food allergies or sensitivities can benefit from less-common proteins.

    Eggs

Eggs add protein and fat to dog food and are used in Farmina’s recipes. They’re full of nutrients and easily digestible.

    Grains

Some Farmina recipes are grain free, but others include ingredients like oats and spelt. These may be less processed than many other grain options and add nutrients and fiber to the recipe.

    Yeast

Brewer’s yeast appears in a few recipes, and while this ingredient can provide certain nutrients, it may also trigger an allergic reaction in some dogs.

A Quick Look at Farmina Dog Food

    Pros
    • Made with high-quality ingredients from trusted sources
    • No recall history
    • Plenty of recipe options
    • Good for all dog breeds

    Cons

    Farmina Dog Food Recall History

There is no Farmina dog food recall history available in the United States or Europe, which speaks to the company’s standards for safety and quality. However, just because the food has never had a recall doesn’t mean it will never happen. You should always be aware of recall alerts and issues, especially for the brand of food that you buy.

Reviews of the 3 Best Farmina Dog Food Recipes

    1. Farmina N&D Ancestral Grain Lamb & Blueberry Medium & Maxi Dry Dog Food

Farmina N&D Ancestral Grain Lamb & Blueberry Medium & Maxi Adult Dry Dog Food

The Ancestral Grain Lamb & Blueberry recipe uses lamb as the first ingredient for a high protein content of 28%. All fresh ingredients are used in the formula, and 92% of the protein is from animal sources. Farmina recipes are typically low glycemic, and this one is no different. It won’t spike blood sugar, so it’s a good option for dogs that need this type of diet.

The blueberries in the recipe are rich in antioxidants. Natural omega fatty acids are included for skin and coat health. All breeds can enjoy this food, but it’s formulated for adult dogs.

The food is low in fiber at 2.9%, which can make some dogs experience loose stools. This low fiber percentage is added intentionally because Farmina believes that dogs should get their primary nutrition from meat sources.

    Pros
    • Won’t spike blood sugar
    • Full of antioxidants from blueberries
    • High in protein from real lamb

    Cons

    • Low fiber can cause loose stools in some dogs

    2. Farmina N&D Ancestral Grain Chicken & Pomegranate Medium & Maxi Adult Dry Dog Food

Farmina N&D Ancestral Grain Chicken & Pomegranate Medium & Maxi Adult Dry Dog Food

The first ingredient in this chicken-and-pomegranate formula is deboned chicken. The vitamins in the food remain fresh due to a coating system that adds them to the food after it’s cooked. This locks in the nutrients instead of cooking them away.

Like Farmina’s other recipes, this one is low glycemic and won’t spike blood sugar. It is made with limited carbohydrates and helps dogs maintain a healthy body weight.

The food may have a strong odor to it that some dog owners don’t like.

    Pros
    • Won’t spike blood sugar
    • Vitamins are added after cooking
    • Deboned chicken is the first ingredient

    Cons

    • Unpleasant odor

    3. Farmina N&D Herring & Orange Medium & Maxi Adult Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

Farmina N&D Ocean Herring & Orange Medium & Maxi Adult Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

This herring and orange recipe is grain free, so make sure to ask your vet if a grain-free diet is right for your dog before switching to it. There are reports of grain-free diets being linked to dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. These are still being investigated by the FDA.

This formula is balanced to give your dog the proper amounts of protein, fats, carbs, vitamins, and minerals. Dried orange, pomegranate, apple, and spinach offer antioxidants and nutrients. Sweet potatoes add fiber and healthy carbs.

Since the food is packed with fish, there is a noticeable fishy odor to it.

    Pros
    • Filled with real fruit and vegetables
    • Balanced diet for your dog
    • Good for dogs with grain intolerances

    Cons

    • Fishy odor

    What Other Users Are Saying

    • Watchdog Labs — “It has no controversial ingredients, including zero artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors. The food also has very well-balanced amounts of protein, fat and carbs and excellent meat and fat quality.”
    • Moesonson — “They seem to be higher in protein and less in carbs, contain mainly named animal products as main ingredients, and a decent amount of meat. We recommend this!”
    • Amazon — As pet owners, we trust what other pet owners have to say about a product. You can read their reviews here.

    divider-dog pawConclusion

Farmina dog food is a premium, high-quality food that provides excellent nutrition for dogs. We would have given the food five stars if it was more affordable and readily available everywhere. Its limitations affected our rating. That said, it is still a great option for most dogs to maintain their health and energy.
