What Is Mexican Rice?

If you aren’t familiar with Mexican rice, you may be curious as to how it’s different from white rice. You may hear this dish also referred to as Spanish rice or red rice. Mexican rice is usually made using medium-grain white rice that is rinsed, soaked, and then toasted in a pan. What really sets Mexican rice apart is the ingredients that are then added. Tomato sauce or puree and cumin are staples of this dish and are part of what gives Mexican rice the reddish hue it’s known for. The problem is that many recipes include garlic, onions, other vegetables, and even chicken, vegetable, or beef stock, and this is where concerns come into play with your dog.

Dog-friendly Mexican rice will be made with rice, cumin, some tomato paste and even some chicken broth. Too many spices and tomatoes can be difficult on your dog’s stomach, and some additions, like garlic and onion, can be toxic. If you want your dog to have a new spin on rice, it’s best to keep it simple. You can always set aside some for your canine companion before adding any extra spices or ingredients.

The Benefits of Rice for Our Dogs

Rice is often found in lots of dog foods on the market including dry food, canned food, and fresh food options. This is due to the great benefits it can provide our pooches. Let’s take a look at these benefits now.

  • Rice is a complex carbohydrate that can provide your dog with lasting energy
  • Rice contains essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that can support your pooch’s immune system and help keep them healthy
  • For dogs with sensitive stomachs or digestive issues, rice is a simple grain that is easy for them to process

Tips for Preparing Mexican Rice for Your Dog

If you want your pooch to enjoy a bit of Mexican rice, preparation is crucial. Start with plain, white rice that is rinsed and cleaned thoroughly. Then ensure the rice is thoroughly soaked before it is placed into the pan to toast. You should avoid using oils or seasonings while toasting the rice. As we mentioned, if you want to use a bit of tomato or tomato puree that is fine, but keep the amount minimal. Tomatoes are acidic and can upset your dog’s tummy if you use it too much. Keep garlic and onions far away from the dish. Once finished, let the rice cool. You can then offer it to your dog as is or mix it with their food for a great meal.
