How Much Exercise Does My Cane Corso Need? Facts & FAQ

cane corso playing

Cane Corsos require about 30 minutes of exercise twice a day. They’re larger dogs, but they’re more active than most big dogs. However, they’re still not nearly as active as German Shepherds or Golden Retrievers. They’ll spend much of their time lying around, especially after they get all the exercise they need for that day.

Puppies may need slightly more exercise. However, because these dogs are so large, over-exercising puppies can lead to joint and growth plate damage. Therefore, you should be fairly cautious about providing younger puppies with too much exercise. Shorter sessions spread throughout the day are often best.

These larger dogs are prone to joint problems, as their joints have to carry around more weight. Obesity can make these predispositions worse. Therefore, keeping these dogs fit and well-exercised is vital for their health. Don’t skimp on their exercise just because they tend to spend much of their time lying around.

How Often Should a Cane Corso Be Walked?

You should be walking your Cane Corso at least once a day. Two shorter walks also work, especially if your dog is younger. You should be careful not to overexercise your Cane Corso while also keeping their weight in check. Exercising your dog for around an hour every day or so is plenty. You can split this into one session, two, or even three.

We highly recommend providing plenty of time for your dog to sniff and rest while on their walks, too. Therefore, if your canine needs 30 minutes of walking, you should probably plan to spend at least 45 minutes on the walk. Sniffing allows your dog to explore, which can keep them from getting bored later. Sniffing is a lot like reading for dogs.

In addition to regular walks, Cane Corsos can benefit from other activities such as playing fetch, swimming, or participating in canine sports like agility or obedience training. These activities can help to provide mental stimulation and enhance the bond between the dog and its owner.

In my experience, it is often best to use a variety of methods to exercise your dog. This prevents both you and your dog from getting bored.

What Is the Best Exercise for a Cane Corso?

Cane Corso are extremely large dogs that can participate in just about any kind of exercise. Walks are an easy way to provide some mental and physical stimulation. However, they aren’t the only way you can get your dog to exercise.

The exact sort of exercise your dog likes will depend on their preferences and temperament. Some dogs may love to swim, and others may not like it. Keep your dog’s temperament in mind, and don’t be afraid to try new forms of exercise. Dogs often need a bit of practice before they are comfortable with a new kind of exercise.

1. Canine sports

Cane Corsos are intelligent and enjoy learning new skills. Participating in canine sports such as obedience, agility, or tracking can provide a mental and physical challenge while strengthening the bond between the dog and its owner.

2. Interactive play

Cane Corsos enjoy playing with their owners and can benefit from interactive games, such as fetch or tug-of-war. These activities provide a mental challenge as well as physical exercise.

3. Long walks

These big dogs enjoy long walks and require at least an hour of daily exercise. Long walks provide an opportunity for them to explore their environment and burn off excess energy.

4. Running and jogging

Cane Corsos are active and athletic dogs that enjoy running and jogging. They are natural athletes and benefit from regular cardiovascular exercise. However, it’s important to avoid excessive running and jumping activities for young or growing puppies to prevent joint problems.

5. Swimming

These dogs are excellent swimmers and enjoy this low-impact activity, which is also easy on their joints. Swimming can provide a full-body workout while allowing them to cool off during hot weather. However, dogs that swim need to be introduced to the water early, or they may be too fearful of trying.

How Many Miles Should a Cane Corso Walk a Day?

The exact number of miles a Cane Corso needs to walk depends on their fitness level, temperament, and age. Usually, these dogs need to walk around two miles a day—if not more. Never make your dog walk a certain number of miles, especially larger dogs like the Cane Corso. If your dog appears tired, you should allow them to rest. In some cases, splitting the walk into multiple sessions is the best option.

Younger Cane Corso puppies may require shorter, more frequent walks throughout the day to burn off their excess energy, while older Cane Corsos may have limitations due to health issues and may require shorter and less intense walks.

Factors that Affect a Cane Corsos Exercise Needs

There are tons of factors that can determine how much exercise a particular dog needs. It’s vital to consider all of these factors when planning to exercise your dog. Not exercising enough can cause obesity (and joint problems), but exercising too much can also cause joint problems.

It’s a careful balancing act. Here are some of the factors you may want to keep in mind.

  • Activity level: Some Cane Corsos are more active and require more exercise than others, depending on their personality and temperament.
  • Age: Younger Cane Corsos typically have more energy and require more exercise than older dogs.
  • Climate: Extreme temperatures can impact a Cane Corso’s ability to exercise. During hot weather, it’s essential to provide plenty of water and exercise during cooler times of the day.
  • Diet: A Cane Corso’s diet can also affect their exercise needs. A healthy diet can provide the energy and nutrients necessary for physical activity.
  • Health: If a Cane Corso has any underlying health conditions, they may require less exercise or specific types of exercise tailored to their needs.
  • Living environment: The amount of space available for a Cane Corso to exercise can also affect their exercise needs. If they live in a small apartment, they may require more frequent walks or access to a dog park for exercise.
  • Fitness level: Dogs that exercise a lot may need more exercise than dogs that haven’t been very active. Just like humans, some dogs are fitter than others, which will affect how much exercise they can do before they’re tired.

You should adjust your dog’s exercise schedule to fit their particular needs. A one-size-fits-all option rarely works for most dogs.

Summary

Cane Corsos may be larger dogs. However, they require more exercise than the average dog. They were bred to be working animals, so they have quite a bit of energy they need to run through each day. They need about an hour of activity each day, but it is best to separate this activity into at least two different sessions.

Be careful not to overexercise these canines. They’re prone to joint problems, and too much exercise can make these worse. However, too little can lead to obesity, which can also lead to worse joint issues. Therefore, you have to walk a fine line between too much and too little.
