Georgia has both very rural areas and very urban areas, and the dogs that are popular in each area are different. For instance, Frenchies tend to be very popular in urban areas, but they are less popular in rural areas. Therefore, you’ll see huge differences between popular dog breeds, depending on the area.

With that in mind, we’ll take a look at the 10 most popular dog breeds below. Pulling data from local kennel clubs, dog walking websites, and impoundments, we’ll list the most popular dog breeds in the state.

The 10 Popular Dog Breeds in Georgia

1. Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dogs in the United States, so it isn’t surprising that they are one of the most popular breeds in Georgia. These dogs are known for their friendly and outgoing nature, which makes them a great family dog.

They are extremely intelligent and versatile, adapting to just about any situation. They work great as your average family dog, no matter your children’s ages. This breed can also be utilized as a service dog (and they often are). As long as they get enough exercise, you can even keep a Labrador Retriever in a larger apartment.

Their gentle temperaments and versatility as a family dog are likely why they are so popular in Georgia.

2. German Shepherd

German Shepherds are another extremely popular dog in the United States and Georgia. They are extremely loyal, intelligent dogs. They’re often used for police and military work, which is one reason why so many people want this breed.

However, it is important not to adopt a German Shepherd unless you know what you’re getting into. These dogs are very loyal, but they can also be protective. If not socialized and trained properly, they can easily become overprotective and aggressive. Therefore, they require more time than other dogs and should only be adopted by those who plan to put in the time.

That said, German Shepherds can make great family dogs when they’re properly taken care of.

3. French Bulldog

The French Bulldog became the most popular dog in the world in 2022, so we expected to see it on this list—especially when you consider the sprawling Atlanta urban area. These dogs work very well in smaller spaces, making them perfect for apartments. They also have adorable bat-like ears and charming personalities.

However, these dogs have tons of health problems. Their snouts are “squished,” making it difficult for them to breathe properly and leading to tons of health issues. For instance, they often don’t do well in surgeries of any kind, and they aren’t allowed on most airplanes. Their shortened snouts also make them tire easily, which limits their energy level.

Of course, they are so popular for a reason.

4. Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers are very beloved dogs and have a kind disposition. They make great family dogs for this reason. They do well with children of all ages, as well as single individuals. These dogs are quite active, though, so they do best with active families.

This breed is pretty intelligent, so they can be trained to perform all sorts of tasks. They can perform the work of a service animal. Their striking golden coats are another plus, too.

You’ll find many of these dogs in Georgia, especially in more suburban and rural areas.

5. Bulldog

The Bulldogs are another popular breed. Again, as low-energy dogs, Bulldogs tend to be more common in urban areas. However, because Bulldogs are bigger than Frenchies, you’ll find them just as often in more suburban areas, too.

These dogs are extremely people-oriented. They love their families and make that known. However, they are sometimes a bit too people-oriented, which can make them challenging to train and control.

Bulldogs have distinctive wrinkled faces and sturdy builds. They aren’t the healthiest breeds, as they’re brachycephalic. In other words, their squished faces prevent them from breathing correctly.

6. Poodle

Poodles are available in three different sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. They don’t shed much and are extremely intelligent, which makes them a good option for those looking for a very trainable dog. They’re popular in all their sizes in Georgia, with smaller dogs being more popular in urban areas.

This breed is known for excelling at canine sports and activities. They’re a versatile choice for active families, though we don’t recommend them for more laid-back individuals.

7. Beagle

Beagles are surprisingly popular in Georgia. In fact, in some parts of the state, they may be the most popular dog breed. They were originally developed as hunting dogs. However, they’re extremely friendly and decently low-maintenance. Therefore, they make great companion animals, too. They’re also smaller, so they can be kept in small homes.

This breed is curious and energetic. They do require some exercise, but not nearly as much as some of the other breeds on this list. Their biggest problem is their history as hunting dogs. They have a very powerful nose that they will follow, which makes them more likely to wander off.

8. Rottweiler

Rottweilers are loyal, powerful dogs that are well-known for their guarding capabilities. Many people adopt them with these instincts in mind, whether they plan on using them as guard dogs or not. They can be loving companions if properly socialized and trained, but this does require a lot of work. Otherwise, they may be a bit too protective, which can make them aggressive.

You’ll find these dogs throughout the state. However, they do best when given plenty of room. Therefore, they don’t often do well in urban areas. Plus, they also need plenty of exercise, which can make them harder for laidback families to handle.

These dogs can make great family pets, but it is vital that they are trained properly.

9. Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkies may be small, but they have very big personalities. They’re known for being spunky and entertaining, though they’re small enough for apartment living. Those that don’t want a French Bulldog but need a smaller breed may find a suitable option in the Yorkie.

They’re well-suited to city living in Georgia and bond deeply with their owners. However, it is important to socialize them properly and not spoil them too much. Otherwise, they can develop “small dog syndrome,” which occurs when a smaller dog isn’t properly trained or socialized.

These canines have long, silky coats that require a decent amount of grooming—besides that, they are pretty easy to care for.

10. Dachshund

Dachshunds used to be much more popular than they are now. However, they are still a common sight in Georgia. They have very elongated bodies and short legs, making them instantly recognizable. Despite being small, these dogs are actually very active. They bond closely with their humans, but they aren’t the best option for those with children.

Because their spine is so long, they are prone to back issues and are easily injured, which can cause pain and even paralysis.

This breed is particularly good for older individuals and those with older children. Socialization is vital, as they can be fearful if not socialized properly.

Conclusion

Georgia has fairly similar popular dog breeds to the rest of the country. Many Georgians prefer French Bulldogs, Labrador Retrievers, and German Shepherds, just like the rest of the country. However, you will find a few surprising breeds on this list, like the Beagle. These canines are hunting hounds that make great family pets, so it isn’t surprising that they are popular in Georgia.

Of course, while these are the most popular dogs, there are tons of other dog breeds, as well.
