Miniature Rottweiler Dog Breed: Info, Pictures, Care Guide & More

mini rottweiler

What is a miniature Rottweiler? A dog that combines strength, endurance, loyalty, and fearlessness all packed in a tiny body? While we hope it’s yes, we can’t actually say for sure since a miniature Rottweiler (also called Pocket Rottie, Rottiebear, or mini Rottie) is not a purebred, you won’t know exactly his personality and physical traits until he is fully grown.

Indeed, mini Rotties can come from a cross between a Rottweiler and a smaller breed, such as the Beagle, the Miniature Pinscher, the Chihuahua, or the Poodle. These puppies are then less likely to suffer from life-threatening health issues or genetic disorders.

Breed Overview

Height

Up to 12 inches

Weight

30–60 pounds

Lifespan

8–11 years

Colors

Black with some tan markings around the head, mouth, and paws

Suitable for

Active families, those looking for a small watchdog

Temperament

Energetic, intelligent, loyal, alert, loving, protective

A miniature Rottweiler can be a Rottweiler with dwarfism1 or the offspring of two runts of the litter from different parents. However, experts strongly recommend avoiding such unethical breeding, as the puppy will likely be weaker and suffer from health issues throughout his life.

Nevertheless, it is possible to acquire a miniature Rottweiler from more responsible breeding. If you’d like to learn more about what to expect from this interesting mix, read on!

Miniature Rottweiler Characteristics

Energy
+
High-energy dogs will need a lot of mental and physical stimulation to stay happy and healthy, while low-energy dogs require minimal physical activity. It’s important when choosing a dog to make sure their energy levels match your lifestyle or vice versa.
Trainability
+
Easy-to-train dogs are more skilled at learning prompts and actions quickly with minimal training. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice.
Health
+
Some breeds, due to their size or their breeds potential genetic health issues, have shorter lifespans than others. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet.
Lifespan
+
Some dog breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems, and some more than others. This doesn’t mean that every dog will have these issues, but they have an increased risk, so it’s important to understand and prepare for any additional needs they may require.
Sociability
+
Some dog breeds are more social than others, both towards humans and other dogs. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. No matter the breed, it’s important to socialize your dog and expose them to lots of different situations.

Miniature Rottweiler Puppies

Finding a miniature Rottweiler pup is not necessarily an easy task, as they are not officially recognized as purebred. Because of this, you will have to browse through often questionable offers from unscrupulous sellers who wish to take advantage of the increased demand for these puppies. In any case, ask to see the pedigree of the parents and inquire about the breeding program

Don’t waste your time and money on a puppy breeder who refuses to let you see his establishment, tell you about his breeding practices, and show you the puppy’s parents. We have a list of questions to ask a breeder to help you out, though we do encourage adopting and not shopping whenever possible.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Miniature Rottweiler 🧠

Miniature Rottweilers are generally dogs with above-average intelligence and a friendly, protective, loyal, and vigilant temperament. However, it mostly depends on the breed he was crossed with. It is therefore impossible to predict the character traits as well as his final personality.

However, a good breeder will be able to tell you about the character of the puppy’s parents, which will give you an idea of your pooch’s future behavior.

Are These Dogs Good for Families? 👪

Rottweilers are known to be devoted to their families and very protective dogs. So, contrary to their reputation as aggressive dogs, they are very affectionate and make wonderful playmates for children. However, it is true that their large size can cause a problem, especially if the animal has been inadequately trained, has experienced trauma during its puppyhood, or has been poorly socialized.

This is one of the reasons why the idea of a miniature Rottweiler is so appealing to many people: all the qualities of this brave dog reunited in one mini body. But, is this really the case? For example, if you cross a Rottweiler with a Chihuahua, a breed known to have little patience with children, you may end up with a very cute mini Rottie but one that’s not suitable for family life.

However, the opposite may just as well be true. So, it is up to you to do your research with breeders before acquiring such a puppy.

Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets? 🐶 😽

Again, it is difficult to predict the miniature Rottweiler’s affinities with other animals in the house. However, be aware that the Rottweiler has a strong prey drive, just like the miniature Pinscher, with whom he is often crossed. So, even if the size of their offspring is small, they may still want to chase small pets.

Things to Know When Owning a Miniature Rottweiler

Food & Diet Requirements 🦴

The miniature Rottweiler’s nutritional needs vary depending on his age, size, and level of daily activity. Being a small dog with great energy, you will need to provide him with high-quality dry kibble, allowing him to cover all their needs.

However, when he is still a puppy, it is sometimes difficult to gauge his appetite and to ration his portions well; indeed, some puppies tend to devour everything in less than a minute, which suggests that they are starving! If in doubt, ask your veterinarian for advice: he can advise you on the amount of food to give your mini Rottie.

Exercise 🐕

Although small, the mini Rottie loves times of play with his owner and has enough energy in reserve for daily walks of at least 45 minutes. No matter what activity you choose, your pooch will be thrilled to spend time with you, which matters as much as his need to burn off his energy.

Training 🎾

An iron fist in a velvet glove. This is a good approach to use with the Rottweiler, given his stubborn and dominant character. But what about the mini Rottie? The chances that he inherited this trait are high; thus, you will need to train your puppy with firmness, patience, and positive reinforcement. You won’t get anywhere with screaming and harsh punishments.

Grooming ✂️

Generally, the miniature Rottweiler requires minimal grooming. A vigorous brushing per week is enough to remove any parasites, eliminate dead hair, and maintain the coat. This action will also contribute to the renewal of the coat since the loss of the woolly undercoat of the mini Rottie will be facilitated.

Health and Conditions 🏥

Be careful, standard Rottweilers are one of the breeds of dogs with a high cancer rate. They also have a lifespan of only 8 to 11 years, which goes way too quickly when you are a dog owner. However, since miniature Rottweilers are smaller, and hybrid and small breeds generally have a longer life expectancy than large breeds, your mini Rottie may avoid these genetic issues.

Nevertheless, do regular follow-ups with your veterinarian in order to obtain an early diagnosis, if necessary.

Serious Conditions
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Bone cancer (osteosarcoma)
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Gastric torsion
Minor Conditions
  • Cataracts
  • Allergies
  • Hypothyroidism

Male vs. Female

Standard Rottweilers are one of the breeds with a marked physical difference between the two sexes, with the male being much larger than the female. It is, therefore, possible that the female mini Rottie is more delicate than the male.

Regarding his behavior, it will mainly depend on how he is raised and trained as a puppy, regardless of his gender.

3 Little-Known Facts About the Miniature Rottweiler

1. The Rottweiler Can Be Crossed with the Chihuahua

One of the smallest Rottweiler mixes you can make is with the Chihuahua; imagine the adorable little face puppies have from such a litter!

2. The Rottweiler Is One of the Oldest Breeds of Dog

Imported to the Rottweil region of Germany by the Romans, it is believed to have been crossed with a sheepdog, resulting in the breed we know today. For a long time, it was used for the protection of the butchers’ cattle. His courage, tenacity, and protective instinct made him an exceptional watchdog.

3. Rottweilers Don’t Get Their Ears Cropped

Indeed, this practice does not correspond to the breed standard. As a result, miniature Rottweilers will not have to go through this controversial surgery either!

Final Thoughts

Most canine experts do not recommend having a dog that is much smaller than the size and weight stated in the breed standard; however, the miniature Rottweiler is not a recognized breed. A dog presented as a mini Rottweiler can be a runt or the product of breeding several generations of runts together; he may also have dwarfism. This can lead to serious health problems for life.

So, before committing to a mini Rottie, consider either a cross between a Rottweiler and a smaller dog, or a small to medium-sized breed similar to the Rottweiler. Whichever option you choose, be sure to work with a responsible breeder who tests their dogs’ health for hereditary health issues and welcomes potential buyers to their homes.

  1. I have a 70 year old neighbor who has suffered through several burglaries & crimes against her & is very fearful. She is determined to get a Rottweiler for protection. I wanted to suggest an alternative breed or mix that doesn't weigh as much as she does & after training could still be a source of some security & companionship. She currently has several cats & a miniature labradoodle. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
