Great Dane Dalmatian Mix Characteristics

Energy
+
High-energy dogs will need a lot of mental and physical stimulation to stay happy and healthy, while low-energy dogs require minimal physical activity. It’s important when choosing a dog to make sure their energy levels match your lifestyle or vice versa.
Trainability
+
Easy-to-train dogs are more skilled at learning prompts and actions quickly with minimal training. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice.
Health
+
Some breeds, due to their size or their breeds potential genetic health issues, have shorter lifespans than others. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet.
Lifespan
+
Some dog breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems, and some more than others. This doesn’t mean that every dog will have these issues, but they have an increased risk, so it’s important to understand and prepare for any additional needs they may require.
Sociability
+
Some dog breeds are more social than others, both towards humans and other dogs. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Great Dane Dalmatian Mix Puppies

A Great Dane Dalmatian mix is the combination of two purebred dogs. All Great Dane Dalmatian mixes are considered mutts, and this particular cross is not known in designer dog breeding combinations.

You are likely to come across a Great Dane Dalmatian mix if someone’s purebred has had an accidental litter. You might also come across a full-grown adult at a rescue or shelter.

If you see that someone appears to be breeding this hybrid for profit, steer clear of them completely. Reputable breeders do not take it upon themselves to breed purebred dogs at random. It is much more likely that the person needs to be more ethical.

Another option is adopting a Great Dane Dalmatian mix. The most remarkable thing about adopting a dog is providing that pup with a second chance at life. In addition, all vetting is taken care of for you, so much of the upfront expenses of buying a puppy are included in the total adoption cost.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Great Dane Dalmatian Mix

If you own a Great Dane Dalmatian mix, you can expect to be impressed with their mental capabilities. These dogs are extremely smart on their own, and when you combine them, you can be sure they will carry these traits.

However, because they are so immensely different, they can carry on characteristics of either breed. Great Danes tend to be more dignified, often called gentle giants. That is not to say that they don’t have their own warning labels, as these dogs can be very protective of their family members.

If it isn’t fostered correctly, this might also turn into a bit of aggression. However, most of the time, a well-socialized Great Dane is a family-friendly, lovable, tolerant dog. They are incredibly loyal and integrate very well without choosing favorites.

Dalmatians are incredibly playful and energetic. This is undoubtedly the type of dog that wants to be constantly on the go. However, they can also be quite sensitive. So it is crucial to have a good education about the breed itself to understand their specific needs.

When you combine the two of these dogs, you can have any personality mix in between.

Are These Dogs Good for Families?🏡

The Great Dane Dalmatian mix can make an excellent addition to many families with proper socialization. However, adequate training and early socialization are key. It is best to expose this breed to as many new faces and situations as possible.

Both Great Danes and Dalmatians can have slightly territorial characteristics. If fostered correctly, they can make fantastic watch and guard dogs. However, it can also end with the aloofness and suspiciousness of strangers.

If your pup is well trained, they can make excellent watchdogs and enjoy when company comes over. Both breeds are relatively good with children, so they can be a good pup for your kiddos to grow up with.

Since they are likely to have pretty high levels of energy, they might be best with kids 6 years and older. These dogs tend not to know their size, thinking they’re lap dogs, which could seriously injure a child unintentionally.

Because these dogs will be very large as adults, they are not suitable for apartment living. This dog needs a large fenced-in backyard or places to explore. Apartments will just be too small and cramped.

Does This Breed Get Along With Other Pets?🐶 😽

Both Great Danes and Dalmatians can have extremely friendly and social personalities. When they are properly raised with other pets, they generally get along with them very well, even cats. So, when you put it in combination, they should respond very well in most situations.

However, Great Danes might exhibit some same-sex aggression among other dogs. While Dalmatians aren’t inherently aggressive, they can have certain anxieties about new situations if they haven’t been exposed to them before. So, we highly recommend early socialization for this hybrid breed.

Your Great Dane Dalmatian mix is going to be a larger dog. Both of them can have quite a high prey drive as well. This might make them incompatible with smaller caged animals and farm animals. So, keep that in mind before you commit.

Things to Know When Owning a Great Dane Dalmatian Mix:

Food & Diet Requirements🦴

The Great Dane Dalmatian mix is going to be a large to giant size when they are adults. Because of this, puppies must receive the appropriate nutrition to set the foundational building blocks for the future.

You should always purchase a high-quality, protein-rich puppy chow and continue to offer a breed-size-specific diet throughout your lifetime. Diets designed for larger breeds tend to have ingredients that support their bones and joints.

Ingredients like glucosamine and chondroitin are essential for maintaining overall muscular and bone health.

Exercise🐕

Exercise is going to be a crucial part of your dog’s life. Both the Great Dane and Dalmatian are athletic breeds. They require a lot of physical and mental stimulation. On average, they should receive at least 60 minutes of exercise per day to stay happy and healthy.

These dogs are definitely fantastic candidates for dog parks. If you look around your area, you might find several dog parks available to you. If one of these parks has additional agility equipment, it’s all the better.

However, they are not great candidates for high-impact exercises because of the risk of hip dysplasia and other joint issues. Try to keep it fun and light instead. These dogs will love various games, including fetch, scavenger hunts, and even command training.

Since both parent breeds have a lust for adventure, they might also make extremely good hiking buddies.

Training🦮

Your Great Dane Dalmatian mix will require training for the best behavior. Since they will be such intelligent dogs, they should easily pick up concepts like potty training and basic commands.

You can also teach them interesting tricks and work with them on agility exercises. Behavioral training is a must. After all, you want a well-socialized dog who walks well on a leash and is an obedient household member.

If you don’t feel like you’re up to snuff for advanced training, you can always seek the help of a professional. They can help you lay down the groundwork for a successful future.

Grooming ✂️

Both Great Danes and Dalmatians have short coats that shed moderately year-round. But they have single-layer coats that do not have major blowouts twice a year as double-coated breeds do.

However, they will still require regular brushing roughly three times a week. You can also expect to give them a bath once every 4 to 6 weeks to keep their skin and fur looking the best. In addition to bath time, you can take this as an opportunity to perform nail trimming, ear cleaning, and tooth brushing.

Health and Conditions❤️

Since a Great Dane Dalmatian mix combines two parent breeds, the puppies are susceptible to genetic disorders from both sides. Also, since they aren’t regulated, breeders do not have to do genetic testing to look for potential issues within the litter.

It would be best if you took your puppy to the vet as soon as possible so they can get all of their basic care right up front. Always keep up with regular vet care so you can get ahead of any potential developing issues. Diet and exercise play a key role in health, so remember to give your pup all the external support you can.

When you have a Great Dane Dalmatian mix, you must fully understand that your puppy might have some degree of deafness. Up to 30% of all Dalmatians are bilaterally or unilaterally deaf. These genes can easily transfer to mixed breeds as well, putting your Great Dane Dalmatian mix at risk.

Luckily, your vet can perform simple testing to see if this is an issue for your particular puppy.

Minor Conditions
  • Bladder stones
  • Ear infections
  • Happy tail syndrome
  • Deafness
Serious Conditions
  • Copper-associated liver disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Wobbler syndrome
  • Dilated cardiomyopathy

Male vs. Female

Typically, with Great Danes and Dalmatians, the males are decently larger than the females. However, since this is a mix of two different-sized breeds, the same rules don’t apply. These puppies can wind up being any size in between.

Regarding personality, it is also hard to pinpoint this because two different breeds are at play here. Ultimately, you will want to look at this on a case-by-case basis.

Final Thoughts

Both parent breeds that make up this mix are incredible in their own right. However, the combination is a mixed breed of dog and is not regulated in any way. Therefore, you will likely find an accidental litter or see a few puppies that wound up in a shelter.

However, this can be a tremendous breed to bring into your home, permitting your compatible lifestyle. Due to their size and energy levels, these dogs are not the best fit for apartment living or homes with small children.

  1. I got my Gr. Dalmatian as a rescue. It was advertised as a Dalmatian but when I picked him up, his head and chest told a different story. He's 60-64 lbs. and certainly has the Dals coat. I have a trainer who teaches ME how to handle him correctly ( there's a ton I don't know). This particular dog has a mind of his own and is hard headed. I work on recall and basic manners every day. I walk him 5 miles/day rain or shine. we go on pack walks for socialization every week and this has been a godsend for him in being with other dogs. He's very energetic but somehow a big cuttle bug at the same time. I've had him for two years now and never leave him alone in the house, period. Do not get this dog if you're looking for a vanity dog. I'm the luckiest guy on Earth.
