These dogs have a large number of desirable traits and a unique pedigree that make them interesting and fun.

Border Collie Samoyed Mix Characteristics

Energy
+
High-energy dogs will need a lot of mental and physical stimulation to stay happy and healthy, while low-energy dogs require minimal physical activity. It’s important when choosing a dog to make sure their energy levels match your lifestyle or vice versa.
Trainability
+
Easy-to-train dogs are more skilled at learning prompts and actions quickly with minimal training. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice.
Health
+
Some breeds, due to their size or their breeds potential genetic health issues, have shorter lifespans than others. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet.
Lifespan
+
Some dog breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems, and some more than others. This doesn’t mean that every dog will have these issues, but they have an increased risk, so it’s important to understand and prepare for any additional needs they may require.
Sociability
+
Some dog breeds are more social than others, both towards humans and other dogs. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. No matter the breed, it’s important to socialize your dog and expose them to lots of different situations.

Things to Know When Owning a Border Collie Samoyed Mix

Food & Diet Requirements 🦴

Border Collie Samoyeds are medium-sized dogs that will require roughly 2 cups of food per day. Border Collie Samoyed Mixes are active dogs that will benefit from dog food formulated for working dogs. Working dogs will benefit from sports mix or joint supplement feed that will support their muscle, bone, and joint health. Since Border Collie Samoyed Mixes will spend many hours a week running, walking, and jumping, they will need food that supports their bodies.

Exercise 🐕

Border Collie Samoyed Mixes are working dogs that require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. These dogs are working dogs that are used to having a job. That means that they like to be constantly busy. You will need to budget at least an hour per day for your Border Collie Samoyed Mix’s exercise needs. Many of these dogs will require 2 hours of exercise plus toys and games to keep their brains busy when they are at home.

If you do not properly exercise your Border Collie Samoyed Mix, they can become bored, which will lead to destructive behaviors such as chewing, barking, or hyperactivity. You need to physically exercise your Border Collie Samoyed Mix every day and also provide mental stimulation when they are not outside.

Training 🎾

Border Collie Samoyed Mixes are highly intelligent, eager to please, and easy to train. These dogs do best when they are being trained for a purpose. Border Collie Samoyeds might not be excited to learn to sit, but they will love to learn how to guard a perimeter, run an agility course, or herd specific animals. Both Samoyeds and Border Collies are herding dogs that are used to spending ample amounts of time outside working with people and animals. Those traits are passed on to the Border Collie Samoyed Mix. If you have a mind for training or a goal for your dog, a Border Collie Samoyed Mix will be receptive to you.

Grooming ✂️

Border Collie Samoyeds will require a heavy amount of grooming. These dogs have long fur due to their double coats. That means that they will require frequent brushing. Not brushing your Border Collie Samoyed Mix will result in heavy shedding, potential tangles and mats, and the potential for dirt and odor to accumulate. Do not get a Border Collie Samoyed Mix unless you are prepared to brush them daily or bring them in for professional grooming care on a regular basis.

Health and Conditions 🏥

One of the biggest upsides to mixed-breed dogs is their health. Many mixed breeds are much healthier than purebred dogs. That remains true for the Border Collie Samoyed Mix. These dogs are very healthy and have a solid lifespan. There are some health issues to be aware of. Some health issues, such as bloat and allergies, cannot be bred out of the dog. Other issues, like dysplasia and eye problems, can be screened out during the breeding process by knowledgeable or responsible breeders. Bloat is the most dangerous potential health issue that Border Collie Samoyed Mixes face.

Male vs. Female

The biggest difference between male and female Border Collie Samoyeds is the size. Males are typically an inch or two taller and 5 to 10 pounds heavier than females. Males also tend to be stockier, while females are more narrow or slender. If you want a larger, heavier dog, you will want to look for a male. If you want a lighter, slenderer dog, you will want to source a female. However, all in all, both males and females are very similar, and the differences are not as drastic as they can be in other breeds.

3 Little-Known Facts About the Border Collie Samoyed Mix

1. This Breed Is a Mix of Two Ancient Working Dogs

Both Border Collies and Samoyeds are old breeds of dogs. In fact, Samoyeds are one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. It is thought that Samoyeds evolved over 3,000 years ago. Border Collies have been a part of life in the British Isles for hundreds of years. The result is that the Border Collie Samoyed Mix is a combination of two ancient dog breeds. Both Collies and Samoyeds were bred and raised as working dogs, giving the Border Collie Samoyed Mix an ancient and hard-working pedigree.

2. These Dogs Can Withstand Freezing Temperatures

Samoyeds are from the frigid region of Siberia. Border Collies hail from the English-Scottish border. Both of these breeds evolved in cold, wet, and dreary climates. That makes the Border Collie Samoyed Mix super hardy when it comes to weather. These dogs have long hair and are used to working outside with other animals. That means that the Border Collie Samoyed Mix can withstand some truly cold temperatures and will be able to withstand wind, rain, and snow better than many other types of dogs.

3. The Border Collie Samoyed Mix Is Closely Related to Wolves

Samoyeds are routinely ranked as one of the dogs most closely related to their wolf ancestors. That makes the Border Collie Samoyed Mix more closely related to wolves than many purebred dogs that are farther down the genetic ladder. When you add in the intelligence of the Border Collie and the working nature of the Samoyed, you get a mixed breed that is like a wolf in many ways, which can appeal to a large number of dog enthusiasts.
