American White Shepherd

The American White Shepherd is perhaps one of the most beautiful canines to ever exist. Dog fanciers consider them exquisite pups, incredible companions, and excellent protectors. The American White Shepherd is similar to their cousin, the German Shepherd dog. They share the same history and origin as the German Shepherd, and they are crossbreeds of various European dogs, including other breeds that carry the white gene. However, the Germans considered the white color a significant fault and culled the white dogs from the breeding program, neutering and spaying the existing white dogs to prevent their spread.

Height:22–26 inches
Weight:75–85 pounds
Lifespan:12–14 years
Colors:White
Suitable for:Active families
Temperament:Alert & fearless, intelligent, easy to train, protective, loving & loyal

Breeders purposely began raising pure white German Shepherds despite the German Shepherd Club excluding them from the registry and breeding programs to preserve the gene. For this reason, American White Shepherds evolved separately, and the United Kennel Club recognized them as their own breed.

Except for the dense white coat, they are indistinguishable from their German Shepherd ancestors. Their gorgeous fur and wolf-like appearance make them intimidatingly beautiful. They are poised, optimistic, cheerful, and capable of being alert watchdogs and formidable guards.

American White Shepherd Puppies

Despite being considered a fault by some kennel clubs, White Shepherd dogs are highly sought after by dog enthusiasts.  You can check the shelters and rescues in the area, but you may have trouble adopting a White Shepherd since they're less common. If you use a breeder, ask to see the puppies, the parents, and the breeding facility. Reputable breeders will provide health reports and their dogs' vaccination status. White Shepherd puppies are energetic and playful, but if you're not experienced with dog training, it's best to enroll in obedience classes.

Be sure to read the American White Shepherd's care guide so you know what type of food, grooming, and exercise your pup needs to grow into a healthy and happy dog. White Shepherds are not a good option for people with allergies or those without enough time to regularly take their dogs out for long training sessions.

Temperament & Intelligence of the American White Shepherd 🧠

American White Shepherds are loyal to the core and always look out for their owners and families. They have well-balanced temperaments, which has earned them employment as guard dogs, herding dogs, search and rescue canines, guide dogs, and family pets. They are cheerful, devoted, tranquil, and not aggressive by nature, but they can be overly protective without the proper training. American White Shepherds tend to be wary of strangers and react instantly if they think their owners are in danger.

Are These Dogs Good for Families? 👪

White Shepherds get along well with children and are tolerant of them when they play too rough. However, always supervise their playtime since White Shepherds are large and heavy and can accidentally injure tiny kids. They can adapt to various social situations and events and make excellent traveling companions as long as they're well-trained and socialized. White Shepherds become attached to their owners and dislike being alone for long periods. They are playful and highly interested in expressing their fun-loving side by playing fetch, flyball, running, and other activities as long as they do it with their family. White Shepherds are pack animals and need to see you as their pack leader because you don’t want them to assume the role. Therefore, you need to be authoritative but gentle, considerate, and consistent to raise your pup into a well-adjusted family pet.

Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets? 🐶 😽

If they're trained and socialized at a young age, White Shepherds get along with other dogs and cats. They're usually calmer than German Shepherds and learn to accept other pets as friends. Therefore, they have milder dispositions that fit well into multi-pet households, particularly if they grow up with other household pets. However, they can be aggressive toward other same-sex dogs.

Things to Know When Owning an American White Shepherd

Food & Diet Requirements 🦴

White Shepherds don't have special dietary requirements but should eat high-quality dog food with enough protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to keep their energetic bodies healthy. They shouldn't eat table scraps, but you can give them fresh fruits and veggies as treats. However, dogs are not vegetarians, and they cannot thrive on veggies and fruit alone. It's best to find dog food designed for large breeds and formulated for their life stage. Unfortunately, White Shepherds are prone to bloating, but you can divide their daily portions into three meals to ensure they don't consume too much at one time. Puppies require a highly nutritious formula for development and growth, so it would be best to feed them puppy food at least four times a day until they can have adult food.

Exercise 🐕

White Shepherds have a working-dog heritage and need at least 1½ hours of daily exercise. They're more suitable for active owners who spend a lot of time outside, and they thrive in a large fenced-in yard where they can run freely and play. At least two daily walks are necessary, but White Shepherds also enjoy playing games like fetch and participating in agility competitions. They excel at canine sports and can be trained to help you herd livestock and hunt game.

Training 🎾

White Shepherds can be trained to participate in tracking & protection, search and rescue, herding, guiding, medical alert, guarding, and therapy duties. They're incredibly intelligent but need an experienced trainer to guide them. Inadequate exercise and training can turn a White Shepherd into an anxious and unhappy pup. However, it doesn't take them long to learn commands, and they can be trained to perform more advanced tricks. Positive reinforcement is the ideal training method; it rewards your White Shepherd when they display good behavior and distracts or ignores them when they show undesirable behaviors. They don't respond well to harsh punishments and can become withdrawn and stressed if they fear their owner.

Grooming ✂️

German Shepherds have been colloquially known as German shedders because they are unmatched heavy shedders, and White Shepherds are no different. White Shepherds are heavy seasonal shedders. They shed moderately all year but shed heavily twice yearly when they blow their coats. Daily brushing keeps their fur and skin healthy and prevents loose hair from accumulating in your home. Only bathe your dog when you must, as frequent baths dry out their skin and remove  natural oils. It's also crucial to inspect your pup’s ears for ear infections and inflammation whenever you wipe them every week. Also, clip their nails once a month. If you have issues with the process, your vet can show you how to do it safely and keep your dog calm. Like any other dog, dental hygiene is paramount, so ensure you brush your White Shepherd’s teeth at least twice a week using only a dog toothbrush and paste.

Health & Lifespan

American White Shepherds are generally healthy dogs with long lifespans but are prone to some disorders.

Minor Conditions

  • Allergies
  • Mega Esophagus
  • Eye Issues

Serious Conditions

  • Hip and Elbow Dysplasia
  • Osteochondritis
  • Malabsorption Syndrome
  • Bloat
  • Autoimmune Diseases

Minor Conditions

  • Allergies: Food and environmental allergies are the most common, but dogs can also have allergic reactions to fleas and other parasites.
  • Malabsorption Syndrome: This is a digestive tract condition that prevents food from being digested and absorbed properly, leading to alopecia, bloating, and diarrhea.

Serious Conditions

  • Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: American White Shepherds are prone to joint dislocations at the hips and elbows like other large breeds. This condition can cause pain and lameness during the initial stages before your pup becomes entirely or partially immobile, with intolerable pain at the last stage.
  • Mega Esophagus: This is where the esophagus, the tube that connects the throat and the stomach, abnormally enlarges. The signs include stinky breath, weight loss, and diarrhea.
  • Osteochondritis: This is a degenerative joint disease that causes abnormal development of the hip joint, knee dislocation, and damage to the joints and crucial ligaments.
  • Autoimmune Diseases: White Shepherds' genetic lines predispose them to autoimmune and congenital spinal diseases. Their immune systems can attack their organs and tissues, causing structural and functional damage at the sites. Also, they experience defects in the structure and number of vertebrae, causing issues like scoliosis.

Male vs. Female

Male American White Shepherds are larger and heavier than the females, but they have similar temperaments.  Some owners consider females to be gentler than males and more friendly toward pets and strangers. Males are also likelier to have problems if you have other male dogs. However, the White Shepherd's sex is less likely to affect their temperament as their upbringing and environment.

3 Little-Known Facts About the American White Shepherd

1. 1. American White Shepherds Are Not Actually Albino Dogs.

Although albino Shepherds exist, the American Shepherds descended from a lineage of “white-coat” dogs that originated in Europe and spread to America and Canada.

2. 2. This dog Is simply a German Shepherd That Is white.

Their white color is due to a recessive “masking” gene that disguises their coloration and pattern.

3. 3. American White Shepherds can have multi-colored German Shepherd puppies.

White Shepherd mothers can have multi-colored puppies since the white coat color is a recessive gene. Some pups may be white, but others can have different colors and patterns.

Final Thoughts

American White Shepherds are energetic, intelligent, loyal, and playful, and they make exceptional pets for active owners. They're unsuitable for first-time owners and require thorough training, lengthy exercise sessions, frequent grooming, and a healthy diet to be happy and well-behaved. If you love the outdoors and need a jogging or hiking partner, the White Shepherd is ideal. When well-trained and socialized, they also make excellent companions for children.
