History

Like the Labradoodle, the Goldendoodle originated in Australia and North America through an attempt to create a family dog for allergy sufferers. By crossing the low-shedding Standard Poodle with the amiable and family-oriented Golden Retriever, the Goldendoodle was born. Today, this hybrid dog comes from a number of different sources—from a mix of Golden Retriever and Standard Poodle, from a mix of Goldendoodle and Poodle or Golden Retriever, or from a mix of two Goldendoodles.

The Look of the Goldendoodle

Still a relatively new breed, the Goldendoodle can have a variety of different looks. This medium-sized, athletic canine usually has a medium-long (4-6-inch) coat that can be wavy, curly or straight. The coat comes in a range of colors including gold, apricot, chocolate, black, gray and cream. Its ears hang close, its eyes are round and dark and its shaggy tail is usually carried horizontal or curled up slightly without going over the back.

What They're Like to Live With

The Goldendoodle combines the warm friendliness of the Golden Retriever with the intelligence and energy of the Poodle. With a Goldendoodle in the house, you’re never really alone. This happy, lively, energetic dog is the perfect family pet, friendly with everybody and always ready for a game of fetch. According to some breeders, the Goldendoodle’s energy comes from "hybrid vigor," which is when a healthier dog results from the crossing of two purebreds.

The Goldendoodle has a keen sense of smell, but it’s not especially protective—not the best choice for a watchdog. In fact, the Goldendoodle is friends with everyone. This is a sometimes boisterous, vigorous canine, so make sure to give it proper training and socialization from an early age. And, when going out for a walk, don’t forget the leash! After living with one, however, you’ll see that the Goldendoodle has a mellow side: Plop down on the couch after a busy day and your Goldendoodle will curl-up right next to you.

Things You Should Know

:
The Goldendoodle can live as long as 15 years with relatively few genetic health disorders; however, some may develop hip dysplasia, eye problems and a bleeding disorder called Von Willebrand disorder. Grooming the Goldendoodle is easy: Just brush it every week or so, and take it to a professional several times a year. Because the Goldendoodle sheds very little, it is recommended for allergy sufferers.
