Why is my puppies stomach hard?

Saturday my puppies left side stomach swelled up and was hard. My parents said he was constipated and not to worry. The next morning it was back to normal. But to day it is harder but not as swollen as the other day. We don't have enough money to take him to the vet and I was wondering if anyone knew what is wrong and what to do that won't cost that much money.
