My friend has a dog which she neglects and sometimes abuses during training...??

I haven't called animal control about this situation, but for others who haven't seen my other question, my friend owns two dogs which she abuses and neglects. One of the dogs she keeps his prong collar WAY too tight (I can't even fit a finger under there!) and he cries every time she pulls the leash when he's wearing it (and she pulls hard!!). When my friend is training the dog, usually stay, she will choke him when he does not obey. He is still learning, and shouldn't be punished so severly...no dog should. She literally will pull the leash up so high the dog's feet are off the ground, and she'll practially hang him for a few seconds or more. It is sickening to watch and I can't step in without my friend screaming at me...she takes out all of her frusteration and anger out on these poor dogs. I haven't called animal control YET, but until then, how should I help out the dog or owner? How should I communicate? I need to do these things before I call animal control. I want to help.

I also remember reading your posts in the past and it just boggles my mind that you haven't called Animal Control yet. These dogs are being neglected in the back yard and abused. Why are you still friends with the person doing this?

It's obvious that she does not care about her dogs and she knows very little about training, especially considering these are PET DOGS having to learn only basic obedience.

There are many reputable trainers working for police and/or military agencies that use the method of "hanging" a dog by the choke collar in training. In their case, it's because the dogs they work are very high drive and handler aggressive. These methods should NEVER EVER EVER be used in the hands of someone who doesn't know what they're doing, and definitely not with a pet dog such as hers!

As far a the prong... well, the majority of people who own and use them don't know how to fit and use them properly, which makes the collar dangerous. However, a prong *is* supposed to fit tight.

kelci

you need to tell her that she needs to stop her actions just step in no matter how she reacts tell her to Knock it off or you will call animal control.
YOU NEED TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE SITUATION IMMEDIATELY
BEFORE A DOG DIES. IF YOU LOVED ANIMALS THEN YOU WOULD NOT LET THIS NONSENSE HAPPEN. YOU WOULD CALL ANIMAL CONTROL NOW

Stump

Tell her that her responses to her dogs are inappropriate and that you will not allow her to continue this way. If you are concerned about her hiding the dogs (this has happened to me when I confronted someone), then don't say anything and just call animal control right now.

What's the hold up on calling animal control? I remember reading your question a LONG time ago. I realize that you don't want to lose your friend over this, but I'm pretty sure you can call animal control anonymously. I mean, for all she knows, a neighbor could call or something.

I understand why you are apprehensive, but every day you witness this and don't do anything is one more day these poor animals are being abused. It's a crappy situation, but do the right thing.

Good luck.

Cookies 'n' Creme (1998-2011)

Talk to her about it,and warn her that if nothing changes you will CALL ANIMAL CONTROL. If continues, keep your promise. Perhaps your friend doen't know the right way to care for her dogs. If so, talk to her about the right way and buy her a book about dog care and training,

You should definitely tell her. Not nessacarily call animal control rigth away, but just say to her, "His collar looks a little too tight, do you think mayeb you shoudl loosen it?" or just tell her it doesn't look like he likes what she's doing to him, and maybe just try talking to her about it for a while, and if she stops, then it's over with, but if she continues doing it, then definitely call animal control, or somebody or an organization that can help the two dogs out.
Hope I could help!
