I would be just as concerned as you are, I would take him to the vet and have them check out the situation. Then, if he/she thinks its neccesary to remove them, then do so. "Rather be safe than sorry" as we say. Let me know how everything goes with CUTTEE Bo!

They are ALL dew claws. One of my dogs has them all around too. I always thought I would have the back ones removed if he needed to go under for anything but when he did have an operation I forgot! He has broken one to the quick once but never have any of them caught on anything. His back ones are all floppy and he doesn't need them but the front ones are used. My other dog actually wore them down running and never needed them trimmed! If the claws are firmly attached it is a bigger deal to remove than if they are floppy.

Getting your dogs dew claws removed is a serious operation. Your dog will be anaesthetized and her finger or thumb (which ever you want to call it) will be removed.
Most people will have this done when the pups are only a few days old. The older they get the more painful it will be for them. Recovery time could be quite long, considering the paws are stitched and bandaged and the dog can easily chew on their paws.
Deogie gets his dew claws trimmed every other week, to help prevent him from getting them caught on anything.

yes,dew claws, it would be good to remove them from the back legs. My mom's collie ripped them off they bleed and are painful. Would be safe just to remove the back one only, if the ones in the front are floppy and big might be good to remove those as well, but usually they are left on as they shouldn't be large and floppy.

When I adopted my dog, he had two sets of dew claws on his back legs. I had one set removed while he was under anesthesia to be neutered and it wasn't too harsh on him. But, I was told that it was an easy removal because it wasn't attached by bone. The other set was left on because it has bone attatchment and would be a more invasive surgery with a longer recovery.
I have the nails clipped regularly and it seems to be trouble free. Because of the size of his gigantic paws, the first thing people comment on when they say hi to him is how enormous his dew claw is.

Dew claws.
Unless you live in an area with a lot of heather--and so long as you keep his dew claw's nail's trimmed--there should be little worry of his dew claws getting ripped off.
