Longer Life Expectancy?
I knew a very intelligent man a while back, who made a brilliant connection, and I was wondering if anyone could help me piece it together again.
In the Middle Ages, a dog's life expectancy was MUCH longer than today's (like 22-27 years, depending). My friend realized it was due to the diet of the dogs. They would eat table scraps from the men's dinner, which contained a particular herb/spice/seasoning and thus improved their health and overall longevity.
My friend knew what that herb was, and he told me at the time. He himself had tested his theory with his own dog, by grinding that herb/seasoning up and including it in his pet's meal every day. His dog lived to be 23 years old in wonderful health up until the last couple months of his life.
For the life of me, I can't remember what herb he used, and I fell out of touch with him. It's something like Oregano, Rosemary, Parsley, or Basil. Can anyone help me?

I'm not certain...sorry. =(
That said I think probably the scraps may have mad a lot to do with it as well. Assuming many of them were meat. (Although that'd mainly be the dogs owned by the richer people I guess.) Most of the most commonly fed commercial dog foods today don't have much meat.

Feeding a high quality diet will make a dog live longer. Feed a raw diet or home cooked diet and if you're interested, check out these Dogster threads for more information on a raw diet or home cooked diet - www.dogster.com

Adding those herbs that you listed above are great for dogs. I'd add oregano, rosemary, parsley and basil to the dog's food daily. Cinnamon is great for your dog's health too. Garlic is another great herb/spice that's great for a dog's health.
I also give yucca and curcumin and they are both great supplements to add to your dog's diet.
