Is there a way to verify a purebred and get papers, even if you did not get your dog from a breeder?

We have a purebred Red Heeler, but got her from a shelter.

DNA testing will tell you if your animal has a pure bloodline. But, other than that, there's no way to establish Ancestry, which is what I think you really mean. "Papers" only tell of the Linage, not necessarily that the animal is Purebred. Just because an unscrupulous Breeder goes to the trouble and expense of buying a membership in AKC for a few generations, doesn't mean their animals are any better than what you'd pick up at the Pound. That and a copy of Photoshop on my computer, I could prove your GSD is a Yorkie.

No, you cannot register and get papers on a shelter dog. "Papers" just means her pedigree, her ancestors, and how could you get that without knowing who they are? I don't know of any way to change that, unless you do a lot of legwork and find her breeder, which is likely to be a dead end because many Australian Cattle Dogs (Heelers) in America are not registered at all.

There are indeed registries that will register anything, but papers from them might as well be printed on toilet paper, they're so worthless. (They don't ask for any proof of ancestry.) American Dog Registry, Continental Kennel Club, etc.

BUT... even if you can't show or breed her, she can still compete in AKC events with a Purebred Alternative Listing. Check out this link:

It also depends on what you want papers FOR. You can get an AKC PAL registration which will allow you to compete in most of the "sport" venues such as obedience, rally, agility and some herding and/or hunt tests and the like. These papers are issued via an application which is submitted with photos, etc., and the dog must be neutered. I did this with Beanie who was definitely purebred, (I even had his pedigree), but was a rescue, so he could be shown in AKC obedience and rally shows.
As for DNA testing, do not count on it to verify your dog is purebred. I know of MANY instances where purebred, champion show dogs were tested "just for fun". MANY of them, including labs and poodles, came back listing them as mixes. I don't have a lot of faith in them after that.

The only way you could even hope to get papers on the dog would be to find the breeder and see if they registered the litter when they were born. In your case this is going to be very hard. Really papers are only any good for people that show dogs because you are made to have a pure breed dog there. or supposed to anyway.
