Is there a resource, or website, listing known puppy mills & breeders that I should avoid supporting/adopting from?

Not that I know of. But avoiding sending any money into the pocket of Mills & bad breeders is simple.

1. Never, ever spend a dime in stores that sell puppies. No reputable breeder ships puppies to a store for retail sale. Any "kennel", no matter how clean it looks, that ships puppies for retail sale is a MILL. If you support the store, you support the mills.

2. Never buy a puppy unless you have PHYSICALLY been to the kennels & met the parents of the puppies. Always check references and verify they are who they say. (Look up Vet. phone numbers).

3. Better yet: Support groups that are trying to shut down mills and bad breeders. Adopt from the Humane Society or ASPCA or donate to their work.

The first answer is good, but I have a caveat- there are also mills posing as RESCUES. When you are considering adopting a puppy from ANY source, please research them for any complaints people have had, and look for red flags like:

LOTS of puppies, few adults- does it look like they are breeding or "flipping" puppies? (buying them cheap from scummy breeders, then selling them as "rescues")

PUREBRED puppies- these are VERY rare in rescue

VERY high adoption fees- 200 is normal, 500-1000 is not (at least in my area)

Dogs that look sick or dirty-yes sometimes rescues get unwanted, maltreated dogs that take some time to get back to normal, but they should at least be bathed!

And of course, if it is a purebred rescue, talk to GOOD breeders of that breed and see if they have heard of this rescue or recommend it!

This kind of scam is relatively rare, but it does exist, to fool kindhearted people who want a "rescue" puppy.

Buddy

petfinder has lists of shelters around your area. you can also ask a local vet. look for breeders registered in a kennel club. go to the local dog park and ask around.
