I am worried my dog is developing a slight ear infection, how can I tell/how can I prevent it?
I have a Standard Poodle so he needs to have the hair plucked from his ears every once in a while. Fortunately I know how to do it and he doesn't need it done as often as many other poodles. I'm away at college right now and so I only manage his ears when I come home for visits. Last visit I plucked & cleaned one ear but forgot the other (oops!!) and when I came back today (about 2-3 weeks later) the ear I ignored was disgusting. Lots of nasty wax and hair matted with the stuff. Very unusual for him.
I took care of the hair and wax, cleaned it up and tried to be as gentle as possible. I used an ear wipe and powder to pluck & help dry out the ear, but not liquid cleaner. It was clear his ear was more sensitive than normal though. It was also rather moist down in the canal- again, more than usual. There is no trace of the distinctive smell of an ear infection yet, but I am thinking this may develop into an infection. Anything I can do to keep it from getting worse for now?

Try an alcohol free ear wipe. Use ear wipe, much easier to clean up, I'm never quite sure if I got all of the liquid out when using the cleansers!

Yes it sounds like he is getting an ear infection! Kudos for all your hard work on keeping them clean. To help it from getting worse & to help prevent them in the future, you might try PETfection Ear Cleaner Spray. It is 100% Organic and Non Toxic and is wonderful at clearing up ear infections. My pug was getting infections every couple of weeks and as soon as I started using this spray they stopped happening! Now I clean her ears once in awhile, but she hasn't had any infections again (and that was 2 years ago!). You can check it out at www.mypetfection.com. I highly recommend it and found it works much better than any cleaner the vet gave me. Definitely don't use anything with alcohol in it; alcohol can be irritating to ears and make them very sensitive. Hope this helps!

My good friend had a lab that had alot of problems with ear infections. She had to take the dog to the vet at least 4 times a year. The vet told her to get a lamb and rice food. She got the Nutro lamb and rice and now she does not have to take the dog to the vet like she did before. the vet told her there was something in the food that really helped and now he recommends it to others who have the same problem. Good luck
