huffing sounds

I was walking my new dog and noticed that when he stopped to sniff the long grasses he made a sort of huffing sound. He's part lab and great dane we think. Is this some type of hunting behavior?

The huffing sound could be just a sound your particular dog makes, or it could be a sign illness.

I'm assuming if you've just adopted him, he's had a full checkup at the vet. If not,I'd take him in for a checkup to make sure that there isn't a reason he's making this noise.

More than likely, if he isn't making the noise at any other time, it is just part of his individual "sniffing" pattern.

But, if he makes it at other times, he could have some fluid in his lungs or a heart issue, or he could have allergies or the start of kennel cough.

If your dog is healthy, the sound you hear could be the sound he makes when he is really trying to find a scent, or smelling really hard. I have some experience with "tracking" and when my dog is tracking, you can actually hear her when she is on the scent.
