AKC and Puppy Mills

I am interested in getting a french bulldog and have been doing a ton of research. One of the breeders I just talked to said she wont register with the AKC because they support puppy mills - but she will give a lifetime health gurantee. HELP - this is my first puppy - thoughts?

Sounds fishy. I would reconsider your choices. Pick a breeder who shows her dogs and has a wall of health for each mating pair. Never buy from people who won't give you papers or proof of health on the parents, walk away quickly......

Most likely, this breeder is only breeding to produce puppies if they do not register the dogs and show them. What kind of health testing has she done on the parents??? They need to have Cerf eye clearances, OFA patella's, hips, and spines, heart clearances and certification, and von Willibrand's disease testing. All of these testing results come with actual paper certificates and you should demand to see copies of them from both the father and the mother of your potential pup. A lifetime health guarantee doesn't mean anything if the parents are not cleared for these conditions... it just means she will breed another litter to replace your pup if he gets something, hoping you will not return him for replacement. A responsible breeder DOES register their dogs and show their dogs to make sure they are worthy of breeding. AKC does not support puppy mills, they accept registrations from them as well as other breeders. They also inspect and contact authorities to close down many mill
