9mo 38lb spaniel/mix just adopted, large feet. Is 5mile run too far for this age pup. First water stop 2 1/2miles in

It might be too long if he is not used to exercising this much and doesn't have endurance built up. Spaniels are usually full of energy though and running them is the best way to release it! I think if he seems fine during the water break and isn't trying to lay down or anything, then 5 miles should be fine. Also watch and see how he feels and acts after the run and the next day. Any limping or soreness? You can always call your vet and check on the distance too. Hope this helps! Happy running :)

No, I think it's too far if you just adopted him and don't know what his exercise tolerance is. Keep in mind also, he's very young, his bones are still growing, and injuries at his age can have permanent negative consequences. Unilateral (one-sided) hip dysplasia is usually caused by exercise injury during puppyhood. (opposed to bilateral, which is genetic.)

I think it would be safe to take him only IF:
the whole thing is on grass or dirt, not pavement
you're doing a mix of walking and running
the weather is cool
he's been slowly built up in endurance over several weeks already
