Dogs are amazingly adaptable, and it is surprising how well most dogs do when they have a leg amputated or removed. They learn to balance and can walk and run seemingly as well on three legs as they can on four. It does take some extra care from the owners, however, especially when it comes to stairs and getting up and down from platforms like furniture and beds.

Whether you’ve adopted a three-legged dog, or your own dog has unfortunately lost a leg, you can embrace it by giving your dog a name that highlights that fact. Alternatively, you can choose a dog name that you simply love the sound of.

Below, you will find 76 tripod dog names including some that celebrate your dog’s disability and some that are suitable for all dogs.

What Is a Tripod Dog?

A dog with only three legs is commonly referred to as a “tripod dog.” This typically occurs because the dog lost a limb in an accident, but it may also have had to have a leg removed because of bone or other conditions within the affected limb. Some tripod dogs may also have prosthetic legs.

Tripod dogs can go on to live long, healthy, and happy lives, adjusting to the fact they are missing a limb. Some even go on to perform well in agility and other canine sports. However, owners do need to make some adjustments. Tripod dogs can find it more difficult to walk slowly and they will generally get tired out more quickly than if they had four legs.

You can celebrate the fact your dog is different and that they have overcome adversity and difficulties by choosing a name that not only recognizes but celebrates the fact they only have three legs. From names like Trei and Trois, which mean three in Romanian and French respectively, to amusing names like Wonkey and Pokey, there are a lot of options. How To Name Your Dog

Naming your dog is an important step in pet ownership. They will have the name for years to come, which means they need to be able to recognize it. You should also be comfortable calling the name out in public, ensure it isn’t easily confused with family names or other words you might use regularly, and something you’re proud to use.

Don’t Confuse Your Dog

When choosing a name, avoid any that sound too similar to other names in the house. If you’ve got a Boris at home already, don’t give your dog the same name. Even if the name sounds similar, you should avoid it. If you have a Fraya, avoid Trei as a dog’s name. The similar sound at the end of the names will confuse your dog.

You should also avoid any names that sound like everyday words, especially those you will train your dog. Also, avoid using different names or changing names. While a dog can learn a new name, it will confuse them for at least a short while.

Get Everybody on Board

When you’re choosing a name, you need to make sure all of the family are on board. While you can use shortened versions of a name and have nicknames that your dog will likely pick up on over time, it will be easier if you all use the same name whenever calling or training your dog.

Try the Name Out

Before you assign the chosen name to your dog, try it out in your head and out loud. Say it out loud, because you will likely need to do so when you’re at the dog park or when you’re calling your dog over.

Don’t try the name with your dog directly, though, because if you decide against that name, your pup will get confused when you change it.

Conclusion

Tripod dogs typically adapt well to life with three legs, but it will require some adaptation from your dog and you and your family. Choosing a name is an important part of any dog owner’s journey, and there are a lot of possible options and ways to choose names.

Celebrate the fact your dog has been through an ordeal and come out the other side, by opting for a name that celebrates its difference. Or choose a name that means something to you, such as a favorite TV character.
