As reported here, it’s never too early to start thinking about 2012 calendars.I use the plural because you can never have too many calendars around the house, office, or home-office.They also make wonderful, thoughtfulholiday gifts.
Whilecalendars help you (and your giftees) keep track of appointments, birthdays, and other important dates, they can also helphomeless dogs that is, if you purchase calendars that arepublished to benefit animal shelters. Happily, many animal shelters produce calendars to raise awareness of dog homelessness. They are guaranteed to make you smile with sweet photographsand happy tails of adoptable dogs who found theirforever homes.
And so, between now and December, this column aims to feature as many K9 calendars as humanly possible! If your favorite animal shelter has a calendar for sale, please give us a holler so we can feature it here.
Meanwhile, today’s featured calendar, “Comforts of Home,”was produced by the Humane Society & Adoption Center of Rockport-Fulton in sunny Rockport, Texas. I recently had the pleasure of visiting this excellent, caring facility, which plans to add a new building to its property, so it’ll have more room to house homeless pets and give them a chance at “the comforts of home.”
I even had the extra pleasure of getting to know one of the calendar models: a Yorkshire Terrier named Rusty who is Mr. August. (That’s us in the photo above.)
His mom is interior designer Linda Nelson, who has two dogs in addition to Rusty: a big sheepdog mix named Tex and a tiny Maltese named Allie, both adorable alumni of the Humane Society. But Rusty rules the roost at home. Here’s what his calendar page says:
“Hi, my name is Rusty and I’m a Yorkshire Terrorist and always in trouble. Just ask my brother and sister who are both rescue dogs and soooooooooooo perfect. My mom adores me though and saysI havea ‘Napoleon Complex’. That must be because I luv, luv, luv ice cream so much.”
