Dogster advocates for adopting before shopping. We understand there are many reasons for seeking a breeder, so we encourage it to be done the right way. We have not personally investigated all of the breeders below, rather, we have gathered their details for you to get in touch and ask all the right questions before you decide. Learn more about our position and how to choose a breeder here.

The Labrador Retriever, also known as a Lab, is the most popular dog breed in America and for good reason. Well-known for being friendly and loyal, Labs make excellent family dogs. They have sturdy bodies, wide heads, and eyes that hint at the mischief that they can get into if they get bored. These dogs love their humans, and if you get one, they will be happy to follow you wherever you go.

If you’re looking for a sweet, loyal, energetic Lab in Oregon, here is a list of breeders to help you bring home your new best friend.

The 2 Labrador Retriever Puppy Breeders in Oregon

1. Northwest Classic Labrador Retrievers

Northwest Classic Labrador Retrievers

  • Oregon City, OR

Located in Oregon City, OR, Northwest Classic Labrador Retrievers is a small, family-owned business that sells Labrador Retrievers. Its breeding Labs are all AKC registered, and health testing of the dogs is an important part of its breeding program. The breeders believe in the “Rule of 7s” for socialization for a well-adjusted puppy: seven toys, seven locations, seven surfaces, seven different sounds, seven feeding containers, seven different challenges, and seven different people.

Puppies are sold with a limited registration, which means they need to be neutered or spayed and can’t be bred. You will need to fill out an application for a puppy, and the breeders will contact you about available puppies or the next available litter.  They do require a vet reference, so it’s best to have that information on hand when you fill out the application.

2. Labrador Lovers

Labrador Lovers

  • Salem, OR

Labrador Lovers is a small hobbyist breeder that focuses on the Rules of 7 for the puppies, starting at 4 weeks of age, to promote trainability, confidence, and socialization. The breeding dogs are AKC-registered English Labrador Retrievers from English champion and hunter bloodlines. Their puppies are light yellow to dark golden colored.

If you’re looking for a puppy, you will need to fill out a questionnaire, and a $200 deposit places you in the queue for the upcoming litter. If the breeder can’t provide you with the sex or color puppy that you want, the money can be refunded or transferred to the next litter. They offer official ownership AKC registration forms/pedigree papers for an additional fee. Puppies are sold under limited registration, which voids any breeding rights. Puppies have their first round of shots, are dewormed, and are ready to go home with you around 7–8 weeks of age.

A Note About Breeders

Oregon has wonderful AKC-registered Labrador Retriever breeders who believe in breeding healthy puppies. Puppy mills do not hold themselves to the same high standards as reputable breeders, and puppies from mills often come from unhealthy circumstances and then suffer from serious health issues for the rest of their lives. There has been a rise in online puppy mills, so we felt that we should share tips with you on how to avoid them.

Puppy mill breeders may look legitimate, but common red flags indicate that you should take a closer look at where your potential puppy is being bred.

  • A reputable breeder will want to meet you. Never buy a puppy without seeing them first.
  • An online puppy mill will offer to ship a puppy. Shipping a young puppy can cause lifelong anxiety and behavior problems.
  • Watch out for breeders who won’t let you see the dogs’ living conditions.
  • A poor breeder won’t let you meet the breeding parents. Responsible breeders will have no problem letting you meet the parents and will show you their living conditions.
  • Poor breeders will offer many different breeds of dogs for sale.
  • They’re more concerned about money and payment than the puppy.
  • They want to meet you in a parking lot, a rest area, etc. instead of at their breeding facility.
  • They are selling puppies younger than 8 weeks old.
