Are Havanese Affectionate and Cuddly? Temperament & Traits

Woman Hugging Her Cute Havanese Dog

Havanese dogs are affectionate and joyful canines. According to the American Kennel Club, they were the 25th most common dog breed of 2023. The reason for that popularity is likely due to their adaptable nature and small but sturdy body, plus good social skills that make the Havanese a great city pet. They can even live happily almost anywhere and attract admirers of all ages.

Do you like cuddling and relaxing days with your dog curled up on your lap? If that’s the case and you’re thinking about getting a Havanese, you definitely would love to know how cuddly they are. Let’s dive right in!

Do Havanese Dogs Like to Cuddle?

You’ll be happy to find out that most Havanese like cuddling. Of all the dog breeds, this one might appreciate it the most. Also, cuddling these canines is addictive. While you and your furry friend sit on the sofa, you may discover how great it is to run your fingers through a Havanese’s silky hair.

Additionally, their expressive eyes will let you know when they need your cuddle with just one look.

How Do Havanese Show Affection?

Have you ever wondered how dogs show their affection? As long as you know what to look for, dogs do, thankfully, communicate quite clearly. Dogs use their entire body to express their love, from nose to tail.

Keep an eye out for the following indications that your four-legged friend adores you:
  • Cuddling: Havanese dogs like to cuddle with people in general. A love hormone called oxytocin will increase during physical touch with your dog, so cuddling and petting can also help deepen your relationship.
  • Waving the tail: A dog’s tail frequently expresses its real emotions. It will wag back and forth when your Havanese is joyful and affectionate.
  • Following: Dogs are pack animals by nature, and they will have an alpha in every pack. Therefore, you will likely become your Havanese dog’s leader. You may see your pet show their love and loyalty by following you to every corner of the house and looking for a guide.
  • Playing: Having fun with your pet will help you two become closer. It may not be good behavior for your dog to bite, scratch, or bark aggressively, but a little playful roughhousing could only be your Havanese’s way of showing their love. Occasionally they will bring their favorite toy to invite you to play with, even if it’s broken.
  • Eye contact: Dogs show their affection for people through body language. Making eye contact is a popular way that your furry companion will let you know they want your attention.
  • Nudging the nose: Your Havanese may mimic the expression of their mother’s affection they had as a puppy and nudge their nose into you. It’s a method to show their love and, at the same time, get your attention.
  • Licking: Dogs lick their parents for many reasons. It may be a sign of submission. Or they might be grooming you like their mother did when they were puppies and telling you how much they care for you.
  • Leaning: One of the subtlest expressions of love the Havanese can utilize is leaning. Occasionally, they might lean their whole body into you to let you know they want cuddles.
  • Rolling over: Rolling over is an act of love and submission. It demonstrates your dog’s confidence and comfort in front of you. They might also be requesting a belly rub.
  • Jumping: While jumping on people is generally not good behavior, the Havanese usually show affection in that way. Face-to-face greetings are something they enjoy, and jumping up will allow them to get closer to you. But you won’t fall over thanks to their small size!
  • Facial expressions: If your dog looks like they’re smiling, they probably are! Dogs can express various emotions through their faces, just like people can. From adorable smiles to sparkling eyes, Havanese dogs use their faces to show that they love you and desire your attention.

Why Doesn’t My Havanese Like to Be Cuddled?

Don’t take it personally if your Havanese shows no sign of affection toward you and you feel like they don’t want to cuddle. In fact, numerous factors contribute to dogs not showing much affection, like the following:

Your Havanese Is a Rescue Dog

A dog adopted from an animal shelter might have been improperly cared for or abused by their previous owner. If so, they may not trust people or even be frightened when interacting.

Difference in Personality

The fact is that every Havanese dog is unique, so keep that in mind, and don’t expect all of them to be as cuddly as advertised. Ask 10 people about their Havanese pups, and you’ll get 10 different answers. A few dogs are more independent and prefer to lie on the floor rather than on the sofa with you.

Don’t worry if your puppy isn’t a cuddly pet. Your dog is fine—they are just not like most Havaneses in terms of personality.

Changes with Age

While your Havanese may be more energetic and curious in their early years as they want to explore the world, this can change as they age.

Older Havanese canines may enjoy cuddling more because they become lazier and calmer with age, lose some of their curiosity, feel more comfortable with you, and want to spend more time together.

In Conclusion

You will be delighted to welcome a Havanese into your house if you’re looking for an affectionate dog that loves cuddling. They generally have a great personality and are arguably one of the most enjoyable family dog breeds.

If you’re getting a Havanese, be sure to provide all the love, food, exercise, socialization, training, and care they need to be a healthy and happy companion.
