Dalmatians: A History

Originating from Dalmatia (now Croatia), the Dalmatian was known for protecting the borders of their country and being by the side of soldiers during times of war. While their time in Dalmatia is a bit more difficult to ascertain, the more modern use of Dalmatians in Europe during the 17th century as coach guards is what brought them into the limelight. With all the dangers on the roads back in those days, it was understandable that many merchants, and everyday people, wouldn’t travel without the accompaniment of a protector. Dalmatians were perfect for this job thanks to their amazing stamina and protective natures. Keeping up with horses and carriages wasn’t a problem for this breed.

Taking in the size of a Dalmatian, it’s understandable that robbers and evil doers would think twice before attacking a coach with these dogs at their sides. When it comes to their owners and families, Dalmatians have always been known as great, loving pets. However, when they feel their people may be in danger, all that changes. All these capabilities combined are what led Dalmatians to perhaps their most famous job, firehouse dogs. Their speed and stamina made it easy for them to keep up with firetrucks back in the day.

The Famous Firehouse Dalmatians

We can’t discuss Dalmatians without taking a look at one of the breed jobs that made them most famous, firehouse dogs. Before the fire engines we know today roared down the street, old-fashioned fire wagons were pulled by horses. With the experience Dalmatians had with coaches, of course, making them part of the firefighting team made sense. In the 19th century, these dogs were perfect for protecting horses and clearing the way for carts. Dalmatians would run with the horses, to keep them safe. Others would run ahead, using their stamina to clear the streets and allow the firefighters to get where they needed to be without issues.

Dalmatians as Guard Dogs

When most of us think of a guard dog, we think of a big dog. While that is often the case, it isn’t always. The Dalmatian breaks this mold thanks to their alertness and sharp instincts. You’ll also find that they are extremely brave dogs. At the first sign of danger, they will alert their owners. If things progress, your Dalmatian will be by your side. This is due to their loving nature and natural need to protect their families. They are also a breed that is naturally weary of strangers. This is perhaps thanks to their breeding for work and their loyalty.

Can Dalmatians Be Too Protective?

Unfortunately, due to the love they have for their people, Dalmatians can be overprotective. This can lead to behaviors that aren’t exactly desirable. Dalmatians may show aggressive tendencies if strangers approach. They can even become territorial and overbearing with toys and items. Fortunately, if you train and socialize a Dalmatian early in life, this type of behavior can be avoided. You’ll find a perfect family dog with a great disposition and protectiveness of those they love.

Are Dalmatians Good Family Dogs?

While being fearful of protective dogs is natural for families, Dalmatians are first and foremost a family pet. As we’ve mentioned, with proper training these dogs can control their protective tendencies. They are energetic and love to play. You’ll also find that they love being shown lots of love and can even suffer from separation anxiety due to the connections they make with their families. While your Dalmatian will alert and help keep you keen on what’s happening around you, they’ll also be the perfect dog for playtime in the backyard with the kids.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, Dalmatians make great guard dogs. Whether you are a single person living alone, or part of a large family that wants a little extra help when it comes to protecting your surroundings, these dogs can be the answer. Dalmatians were bred to work, and protection is part of that job. You and your family will feel safer knowing these spotted beauties are at your side.
