Review Summary
We give BIXBI food a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
One of the best ways to keep your dog out of the vet office is to offer them a species-specific, nutritionally dense diet.
Every pup is different, so there’s more than one way to do this. Some pets benefit from a high-protein and high-fat diet, and fortunately, there are dog foods that can check both boxes.
BIXBI pet food offers dry and freeze-dried pet food at quite an affordable price compared to many other healthy pet foods. It also has grain-free and grain-inclusive recipes for pet parents who want both options. All formulas include fresh meat as the first ingredient, and some recipes have organ meat for even better nutrition. There are no byproducts or meat meals in the foods either.

BIXBI Dog Food Reviewed
Who Makes BIXBI and Where Is It Produced?
You’ll be thrilled to know that everything BIXBI produces is sourced and made in the U.S.A., with the headquarters centered in Boulder, Colorado. Its recipes are manufactured on the Barrett family farm in Brainerd, Minnesota. The official name is Barret Petfoods Innovations.1
Which Type of Dog Is BIXBI Best Suited For?
Since many of BIXBI’s foods are high in protein and fat, active dogs will do best with these products. Dogs that need to gain weight can also benefit.
Which Type of Dog Might Do Better With a Different Brand?
The price of BIXBI’s food is actually affordable compared to many other healthy pet foods. But if your dog needs to lay off the fat content, you can try Nulo’s pet foods. Nulo specializes in high-protein dog and cat foods. You can find recipes with high-fat content, but its adult trim recipe is low in fat. The downsides are that it is a pricier bag and that you get more meat meals.
Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)
It is time to discuss the primary ingredients of BIXBI, both good and bad. Most of its recipes start with real meat and include organ meat, but it depends on the formula.
For example, the dry food has no organ meat, but it makes up for this by offering several protein options, like deboned turkey and chicken, trout, and egg. It even includes salmon oil, a huge bonus because your dog gets DHA, an essential fatty acid.
Overall, the ingredients in all BIXBI recipes are great and nutritionally dense. So, let’s look at the formula elements in more detail.
Organ Meat
Animal organs may seem gross, but they contain essential vitamins and minerals that keep your pet happy and healthy. Organ meat includes the heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, and spleen. The exception is the intestines, as these can contain parasites.
Not all BIXBI’s recipes contain organ meat, but a few do, like its freeze-dried food and meal toppers. You won’t find many added nutrients in this food because organ meat naturally contains all those nutrients.
High Protein and High Fat
All of BIXBI’s recipes vary in protein and fat content, but the ones listed here have a high protein content between 25.5% and 50%. The only exception is the peanut butter pocket trainers, which have a protein content of 12%.
All the recipes range from 15% to 35% fat content. These numbers are high compared to standard dry dog food. Again, the exception is the peanut butter treats (7%).
High protein and high fat can be a good thing or a bad thing. Athletic dogs, seniors, puppies, or underweight dogs can benefit from a high-protein diet and a high-fat diet. But this isn’t the case for all dogs.
Some high-protein diets have a high caloric count and cause weight gain. Other times, too much protein can cause stress on the kidneys.
High Calorie
Not all protein-rich dog foods have a high caloric count, but BIXBI does. This can be good or bad, depending on your dog’s activity. Active breeds can typically benefit from BIXBI. Dogs that aren’t as active are prone to weight gain and even obesity, so owners should proceed cautiously.
Grain-Free and Grain-Inclusive
BIXBI has a few grain-free options, meaning ones that don’t contain rice, corn, or wheat. Currently, however, the FDA is investigating the link2 between legumes and canine dilated cardiomyopathy.
Regardless of where you stand with grain-free diets, BIXBI offers grain-inclusive options, so you don’t have to switch between two different brands. This is great for picky eaters and for pet parents who are divided on this subject.

- Chewy — “Bixbi is the only brand of dry dog food that Wrigley will gladly eat without prompting. 10/10 recommend to anyone who feeds their pup dry dog food.”
- PetSmart — “I’ve been searching for a dog food with higher quality ingredients, sourced only from America and that my dog likes…finally found the one!”

Conclusion
BIXBI encourages customers to keep “sniffing around” because it has nothing to hide with its ingredients. We like that and can’t help but agree.
We highly recommend BIXBI pet food for dogs and cats. It has various protein options, and you can choose between grain-free or grain-inclusive. We also like that you can choose between dry food and freeze-dried food. It is exhausting jumping around from brand to brand, and BIXBI makes it easy to switch from one food to another.
Even so, we still recommend pet owners have two or three pet food brands that they trust to nourish their pets. This helps maintain a balanced diet and avoid recalls. Thankfully, BIXBI hasn’t had any recalls.
If you’re looking for a healthy, nutritionally dense pet food with several protein and texture options, check out BIXBI. We give them two paws up!
