Cockapoo Characteristics

Energy
+
High-energy dogs will need a lot of mental and physical stimulation to stay happy and healthy, while low-energy dogs require minimal physical activity. It’s important when choosing a dog to make sure their energy levels match your lifestyle or vice versa.
Trainability
+
Easy-to-train dogs are more skilled at learning prompts and actions quickly with minimal training. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice.
Health
+
Some breeds, due to their size or their breeds potential genetic health issues, have shorter lifespans than others. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet.
Lifespan
+
Some dog breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems, and some more than others. This doesn’t mean that every dog will have these issues, but they have an increased risk, so it’s important to understand and prepare for any additional needs they may require.
Sociability
+
Some dog breeds are more social than others, both towards humans and other dogs. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. No matter the breed, it’s important to socialize your dog and expose them to lots of different situations.

The Earliest Records of Sable Cockapoos in History

The first recorded cockapoo can be traced back to the 1950s. The cockapoo came onto the scene due to the popularity of its ancestors: the cocker spaniel and poodle.

In the 1940s, the cocker spaniel and the poodle were overwhelmingly popular. Since they were so beloved, someone had the idea to breed them together. The result was the cockapoo, which was so appealing and affectionate that more and more people began breeding them intentionally.

Although there are no records of when the sable cockapoo was first bred, it can be assumed that the first sable cockapoo was born not too long after the cockapoo was established.

How Sable Cockapoos Gained Popularity

After the cockapoo was created in the 1950s, its popularity skyrocketed immediately. Many people wanted to get their hands on a cockapoo, and when the 1960s rolled around, the cockapoo had many adoring fans. Many families ignored purebred dogs in favor of adding a cockapoo to their homes.

Cockapoos have remained relatively popular, with a strong surge around the early 2000s when designer dogs became trendy. To this day, the cockapoo is a wildly popular dog. Cockapoos of all colors are sought after, and less typical colors like sable tend to be coveted.

Formal Recognition of Sable Cockapoos

Unfortunately, the cockapoo has not yet been officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. However, cockapoo clubs have been founded, and the clubs strive to establish a breed standard for the cockapoo.

For instance, the American Cockapoo Club has set forth a breed standard to try and regulate the traits of the cockapoo breed, promoting desirable characteristics and reducing the number of concerning qualities. In the breed standard, the American Cockapoo Club states that sable is an acceptable color for a cockapoo.

Perhaps someday the cockapoo will be officially accepted by the American Kennel Club, but until then, sable cockapoos can still be appreciated for their beauty and unique flair.

Does a Sable Cockapoo Make a Good Pet?

Cockapoos are excellent pets. They are affectionate dogs that will love any family member, child, and pet that may come into the home. They are so friendly that they even love strangers!

Although they’re often adopted quickly, you may also have luck acquiring a rescue cockapoo.
