Corgi Samoyed Mix: Pictures, Care, Info & More

Hybrid dogs have become popular over the last 20 years or so. The idea is to cross two purebred dogs to make one exceptional dog with desirable temperaments and traits, and one such dog out there is the Corgi Samoyed mix.

This hybrid breed is an interesting mix. The Corgi is a small dog with a long body and short legs, while the Samoyed is a medium-sized dog with a well-proportioned body built to pull sleds. However, both have similar traits and characteristics that are ideal for companionship. In this post, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about this hybrid dog so you can determine if adding a Corgi Samoyed mix is right for you.

Breed Overview

10–23 inches

20–30 pounds

12–14 years

White, tricolor, fawn, white and red

Suitable for:

Active families, experienced dog owners

Loyal, loving, intelligent, easy to train, playful, protective, friendly

The Corgi Samoyed mix is a hybrid dog that combines the Corgi and Samoyed dog breeds. Regarding the Corgi, this dog breed is categorized into two separate breed types: the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. While there are a few physical differences between these dwarf Corgi breed types, there are also similarities in temperament and traits. Both are athletic, intelligent, and natural herders. In fact, the Corgi’s body shape is on purpose; they stand short to the ground to avoid being kicked, and it allows them to nip livestock while herding.

The Samoyed, on the other hand, is built completely differently and is known for being sledding dogs. They are bigger and taller than the Corgi; the Samoyed averages 19 to 23 inches in height, whereas both Corgi breed types average 10 to 12 inches in height. It’s impossible to know the physical traits you’ll get with this mix, as the possibilities are plenty.

Corgi Samoyed Mix Characteristics

High-energy dogs will need a lot of mental and physical stimulation to stay happy and healthy, while low-energy dogs require minimal physical activity. It’s important when choosing a dog to make sure their energy levels match your lifestyle or vice versa.
Easy-to-train dogs are more skilled at learning prompts and actions quickly with minimal training. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice.
Some breeds, due to their size or their breeds potential genetic health issues, have shorter lifespans than others. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet.
Some dog breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems, and some more than others. This doesn’t mean that every dog will have these issues, but they have an increased risk, so it’s important to understand and prepare for any additional needs they may require.
Some dog breeds are more social than others, both towards humans and other dogs. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. No matter the breed, it’s important to socialize your dog and expose them to lots of different situations.

Corgi Samoyed Puppies

If you’re in the market for a Corgi Samoyed mix, you may have a hard time finding a breeder. There don’t seem to be many breeders for this particular hybrid mix, and if you happen to find one, the puppy won’t be cheap.

Many Corgi mixes are available, and if you’re looking for a Corgi Samoyed mix, ensure the breeder is reputable and the dog is, in fact, a Corgi Samoyed mix. If you find a breeder, ensure you meet the parents of the litter and obtain proof or verification that the parents are both purebred Samoyed and Corgi. You will also want a health certificate to ensure the parents and puppies are healthy.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Corgi Samoyed Mix

We know hybrid dogs are a mix of two purebred dogs with exceptional characteristics and traits, and the Corgi Samoyed mix is no exception. These dogs are extremely intelligent and athletic, and they love to be with their humans. They are eager to please and can learn basic commands quite well. These dogs love to be the center of attention and are always up for a play session.

Given that both parent breeds are protective, you can bet the Corgi Samoyed mix will also be protective, making them ideal watch dogs because they will have no problem alerting you to something out of the ordinary. They make excellent companions and are friendly and affectionate.

Are These Dogs Good for Families?

The Corgi Samoyed mix is an excellent addition to any family, and their gentle and playful nature makes them ideal for playing with children. Their playful disposition also makes them excited for car rides, road trips, neighborhood walks, and many other activities. These dogs have tons of energy but will only demand your attention if the dog inherits more of the Samoyed side. They are good-natured with bubbly personalities, and rest assured that life will not be boring living with a Corgi Samoyed mix.

They can also live in just about any setting as long as they receive adequate daily exercise. That said, they do well with apartment living, rural settings, and suburban settings.

Does This Breed Get Along With Other Pets?

The Corgi Samoyed mix gets along well with other pets and even more so with early socialization. They make excellent playmates and will do well at dog parks meeting new furry friends with their sociable temperaments. However, they have a strong prey drive due to their ancestral herding backgrounds, so you’ll need to supervise these dogs around tiny pets, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc.

Things to Know When Owning a Corgi Samoyed Mix

Food & Diet Requirements

We’ve mentioned their high energy, so they’ll need a protein-rich kibble to replenish the calories they burn. Ideally, feeding them twice a day is best rather than one large meal daily. The food should be high-quality, with high-quality protein listed as the first ingredient, such as bison, chicken, or fish. The food should be age-appropriate, as dogs’ nutritional needs change as they age. Ensure the dog food is 100% complete and balanced, as well as approved by AAFCO for quality. If the food is 100% complete and balanced and approved by AAFCO, you’ll know your dog is receiving all the vital nutrients to be healthy.

When providing doggie treats, ensure the treats account for only 10% of their daily intake, and don’t forget to provide fresh drinking water 24/7.

The Corgi Samoyed mix loves to play and will probably never turn down the chance. They love to play fetch, go for walks, and whatever else is fun and exciting. To keep them exercised and healthy, they require roughly 30 to 45 minutes of exercise per day. However, some Corgi Samoyed mixes may inherit the long spine of the Corgi, and if that’s the case, it’s important not to overexert them to avoid spinal damage.

Since these dogs are intelligent, it’s also important to provide them with mental stimulation for enrichment. You can provide this type of stimulation through interactive puzzles and games.

According to the AKC, Samoyeds are part of the working group, and both Corgi breed types (Cardigan Welsh and Pembroke Welsh) are part of the herding group. Considering their work ethics, these dogs inherit the intelligence from their parent breeds that enables them to learn.

However, these dogs tend to inherit stubbornness from their parent breeds, making persistence key to successful training. These dogs do best with experienced dog owners who can assert their dominance over the breed. However, they are eager to please and will do remarkably well when they know a command makes their owner happy. Again, the Corgi Samoyed mix can be trained relatively easily with persistence and patience. Remember to praise your dog when they successfully carry out a command.

Grooming ✂️

Grooming needs will vary depending on what physical characteristics the dog inherits. For example, the Corgi has a dense double coat that only requires good grooming sessions during shedding seasons (spring and fall). Otherwise, they only need a quick brush a few times a week.

On the other hand, the Samoyed has a double coat that is a big shedder even more so during shedding seasons. They require a good brush a few times a week to remove debris, dead hair, and tangles. Given this is a hybrid mix, you’ll need to determine the type of coat the dog inherits to determine the sufficient grooming needs.

Check the ears and nails twice a month and clip/clean them when necessary. It’s also recommended to brush their teeth at least twice a week for dental hygiene using toothpaste made specifically for dogs. You can also provide dental treats in between brushings. Lastly, only bathe when dirty or smelly with a gentle shampoo, or you can take your dog to a groomer if necessary.

Health and Conditions

Hybrid mixes can take on common health issues from either parent breed, and it’s wise to familiarize yourself with possible health concerns so you know what to watch for. Keeping your Corgi Samoyed mix up to date on vaccines and regular vet checkups can help to discover any possible illnesses before they advance.

Minor Conditions
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
Serious Conditions
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Degenerative myelopathy
  • Subvalvular aortic stenosis

Male vs. Female

Regarding the Corgi side, the first difference you may see between the two sexes is height and weight, as males tend to be a bit bigger than females. If the dog inherits more of the Corgi side, a female’s body will stand a bit lower to the ground than a male’s. Males often tend to be more affectionate than females, especially if the female is intact. If the female is spayed, she may be more mellow and easier to train. Males are also more prone to separation anxiety, and unneutered males may be more territorial.

As for the Samoyed side, males will be a bit bigger and tend to be a little more affectionate than females. Males are also more stubborn than females when it comes to training, and intact males can be harder to train. Females enjoy walks or hikes more than playing, and they tend to be more on the wary side when it comes to strangers.

3 Little-Known Facts About the Corgi Samoyed Mix

1. Many Physical Possibilities Are Possible

By now, we know the Corgi has short legs and long bodies, and your Corgi Samoyed mix may inherit that physical trait. However they both have thick double coats, but if your mix has more of the Samoyed side, more grooming is necessary.

2. The Samoyed Coat Is Climate-Adaptable

The Samoyed dog breed is from Siberia, and their thick double coat allows them to withstand the frigid arctic temperatures. However, the same insulation that shields them from the cold also enables them to remain cool in the summer months. Still, take heed not to overexert a Corgi Samoyed mix in hot summer months to be on the safe side.

3. You Shouldn’t Leave Them Alone for Long

A Corgi Samoyed mix may be prone to separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. If left for longer than 6 hours, they can become destructive, such as tearing up furniture or destroying your favorite pair of shoes. If you have to leave your dog for long periods, ensure you exercise them before leaving to tucker them out.
