The Earliest Records of Black Pugs in History

The Black Pug is one of the oldest dog breeds in history and has been traced back to 700 B.C. In China, Pugs were so loved by the ruling class that they had guards employed to protect them. They were also companion dogs for the Tibetan Buddhists and were worshipped in Egypt. While they aren’t worshipped today, they’re the 28th most popular canine in the United States.

It wasn’t until the 1500s that the Black Pug was smuggled from China by Dutch traders to Holland and then to England. Like the Pugs in China, those sent to England were initially owned by royals and the upper class. Once the Civil War was over, they were brought to America, and the rest is history. Now they fall under the toy breed of dogs and are extremely cute, cuddly, and loyal.

How Black Pugs Gained Popularity

What’s not to love about this wrinkly companion breed? The dogs were already well known for their loyalty and were also well trusted; even the Freemasons loved this breed enough to name an order after them in 1740 called the Order of the Pug. The Order of the Pug was established after the Catholic church forbade its members from becoming Freemasons.

In the late 19th century, the Pug became a beloved companion animal in the United States, and its popularity continued to climb in the 20th and 21st centuries. Black Pugs aren’t as popular as colors, but they are still well-known in households worldwide.

Formal Recognition of Black Pug

Since the Black Pug is one of the oldest dog breeds, they have been recognized by many kennel clubs, including the American Kennel Club, which recognized the animal in 1885. They were also recognized in 1966 by the World Canine Organization.

There are a few other kennel clubs that recognize this breed as well.

  • New Zealand Kennel Club
  • British Kennel Club
  • United Kennel Club
  • Canadian Kennel Club
  • Australian National Kennel Council

Top 3 Unique Facts About the Black Pug

Here are a few unique facts about the Black Pug that every pet owner should know.

1. Black Pugs Are Willful Creatures

While Black Pugs are adorable, sweet, and loyal, they can also be quite willful. This also means they are moderately hard to train if they aren’t trained as puppies. If you’re not careful, your Black Pug will easily take control of you and your home, so train your pet early.

2. Black Pugs Are Rare but Not Too Rare

While Black Pugs are rarer than other colors, they aren’t so rare that you can get one from a reputable breeder. They also aren’t as rare as the Silver Pug, so you can find one if you try.

3. Black Pugs Can’t Handle Extreme Temperatures

If you give a Black Pug a forever home, prepare for it to be inside during the hot and cold times of the year. These dogs are prone to hypothermia and can’t breathe if it’s too hot in the summer.

Does the Black Pug Make a Good Pet?

Yes, the Black Pug makes an excellent pet for active families, families with children, or anyone who is looking for a companion animal that is sweet and loving. This dog does well in apartments or homes, but make sure that you exercise the Pug carefully, as it can’t stand extreme temperatures.

They get along great with other pets, but as with any animal, you need to make sure that you socialize and train your Black Pug as a puppy. Remember, it is a willful breed, so training the dog before it’s an adult will help to ensure it listens well and doesn’t try to take over your home.
