The Airedale Terrier has the unique distinction of being the largest of all terriers. Originating from Yorkshire, England, Airedale Terriers are a rugged and intelligent breed developed for hunting in the 19th century. On the other hand, the Poodle is the second most intelligent dog breed in the world, explaining why it excels at numerous activities. Additionally, Poodles have hypoallergenic coats, allowing them to be used to create allergy-friendly mixed breeds.

Consequently, the Airedoodle is a relatively large, active, and extremely intelligent dog. It loves the outdoors and relishes every moment spent with its family. If you are looking for a fun-loving companion, you cannot do better than the Airedoodle. Read on to learn everything you need to know about this beautiful designer breed.

Airedoodle Puppies

Airedoodles are among the rarest designer dog breeds today, thanks to the rarity of Airedale Terriers. As a result, this breed is rather pricey. You must be diligent when shopping for your Airedoodle pup, as not every breeder out there is authentic. Therefore, please do thorough research on a breeder first before dealing with them to ensure they are reputable. This will allow you to purchase a genuine and healthy Airedoodle pup.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Airedoodle

The Airedoodle is energetic, full of life, and always up to some mischief. As mentioned, both of its parents are working dogs, meaning the Airedoodle is always itching for some action. As a result, it isn’t a good fit for busy or inactive people, as it requires lots of exercise and mental stimulation.

But if you are the adventurous type, the Airedoodle is a joy to have. Additionally, these dogs form strong bonds with their families and will shower you with affection every chance they get. Airedoodles are also extremely gentle and patient with kids. Unfortunately, they can develop separation anxiety when left alone for extended periods.

The Airedoodle’s alert nature makes it one of the best watchdogs on the planet.

Are These Dogs Good for Families? 🧑‍🧑‍🧒

Absolutely. The Airedoodle loves giving and receiving attention, making it a hit with children. However, it would be best to teach the kids to respect the dog to avoid accidental nips from rough play.

Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets?

The Airedoodle’s playful and social nature means it requires other four-legged companions to keep it company. However, as with other breeds, you should socialize this dog early so that it has no issues making friends. Nonetheless, due to its Airedale Terrier heritage, it would not be wise to keep this dog around rodents.

Things to Know When Owning an Airedoodle

Food & Diet Requirements 🦴

Since the Airedoodle is a large and energetic dog, it requires a substantial amount of high-quality dry food to thrive. Experts recommend feeding them between 2½ and 3 cups of food divided into two meals per day. When evaluating dog food, make sure it names its protein source on its label.

Avoid foods that state they contain byproducts; even though they tend to be cheaper, they are low quality.

Exercise 🐕

Both the Poodle and the Airedale Terrier are high-energy dogs. As such, it comes as no surprise the Airedoodle is a high-energy canine too. As with all other energetic dogs, the Airedoodle requires lots of exercise to be happy and content.

What’s more, this breed is susceptible to obesity, meaning it needs to stay active to keep the extra pounds at bay. Most importantly, a worn-out Airedoodle is less likely to develop destructive behaviors.

Consider playing high-intensity games with your Airedoodle, such as fetch for at least an hour a day. As mentioned, this doggo is an excellent fit for active people. Therefore, you can use your running/jogging time to work this doggo out by having them accompany you.

Training 🎾

The Airedoodle’s exceptional intelligence makes it one of the easiest dogs to train. Moreover, this dog is eager to please, making training sessions a rewarding experience for both of you. Consider getting toys for them as well to keep them busy.

Grooming✂️

You are advised to brush the Airedoodle’s coat daily to keep it in good condition. While at it, check the dog’s ears for wax buildup to prevent infections. Additionally, consider brushing their teeth at least every other day to keep periodontal disease at bay.

Health and Conditions 🏥

Minor Conditions
  • Cataracts
Serious Conditions
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Obesity

Fortunately, like many hybrids, the Airedoodle is less susceptible to genetic disorders. However, as mentioned, the quality of your Airedoodle pup is dependent on the breeder. Therefore, you want to deal with a breeder who can present you with the health certificates of the pup’s parents.

This is because the health issues in a pup’s lineage allow you to know what problems to anticipate.

Most Airedoodles suffer from dermatitis due to the wiry texture of their coat that makes their skin itchy. The major telltale sign of dermatitis is excessive licking. Fortunately, you can keep this disease at bay through regular brushing and the occasional bath.

Hip dysplasia is common in medium to large dogs such as the Airedoodle. Hip dysplasia resembles arthritis in that it compromises your pet’s mobility. Early symptoms of this disease include lethargy and difficulty standing or sitting.

The most common cause for hip dysplasia is obesity due to the strain the excess weight puts on the dog’s joints. Therefore, ensure your doggo is receiving sufficient exercise to prevent the onset of this condition.

Airedoodles are also prone to obesity. This is because this breed is designed to be active. As such, it gains weight quickly when it is inactive. Obesity can lead to several life-threatening ailments, such as diabetes and heart disease. Fortunately, you can stave off obesity by exercising the dog and feeding it a proper diet.

The Airedoodle might also develop cataracts. This disease results from a water imbalance in the eye’s lens, resulting in a cloudy lens. Therefore, if you notice your pup has a cloudy or foggy eye, take them to the vet immediately.

Male vs. Female

Both sexes are sweethearts. Males tend to be slightly larger than females, but there’s not much else that distinguishes them. Regardless of the sex you choose, make sure that you have them spayed or neutered to prevent behavioral problems when the dog reaches sexual maturity.

Conclusion

There you have it, a thorough rundown of the awesome Airedoodle. Like its parents, this doggo is remarkably intelligent and energetic, making it an excellent fit for most families.

However, this pooch might not be a good fit for seniors, as it has high mental and physical stimulation requirements. Additionally, this dog does not do well alone, as it is susceptible to separation anxiety. Therefore, only adopt the Airedoodle if you are capable of meeting its needs.

Most importantly, make sure to do your research on a breeder before dealing with them. Treat the process the same way you would buy a car or any other expensive purchase. That research will involve going online to look for user reviews on the breeder and visiting the breeder’s social media pages to feel what they are all about. Good luck!

    1. Hello there,

We're happy to hear you're looking for a new canine companion! Unfortunately, we are not in touch with any dog breeders, so we are unable to help you out with this. Our best suggestion would be to visit your local shelters and see if you could find a great doggy there to adopt. Alternatively, you can try to search online for something like "Airedoodle breeders in my area". This can be a great starting point for your search.

We hope this helps you in your search for a new family member!
