The Earliest Records of Cream French Bulldogs in History

French Bulldogs are French companion dogs that first appeared in Paris in the mid-19th century as a cross breed of Bulldogs and Parisian ratters. Around 1835, lace workers from England brought Toy Bulldogs into Normandy, France.

The French people loved the breed and mostly wanted the smallest Bulldogs they could find, which is why the English sent over more miniature Bulldogs, trading them for other goods. By 1860 there were only a few Bulldogs left in England due to such exploitation and export of this breed.

This breed slowly gained recognition in France as a completely new breed called the Bouledogue Francais (French Bulldog). The French were amazed by these Bulldogs and considered them extremely fashionable, especially among society ladies, prostitutes, artists, fashion designers, and writers.

However, their popularity decreased throughout the years after World War I, so by the 1940s, they became an extraordinarily rare breed. However, although the whole breed was rare, Cream French Bulldogs were among the rarest.

That changed in the 1950s when a Detroit breeder, Amanda West, started exposing Cream French Bulldogs with success in various show awards, making Cream Frenchies more common in the shows and competitions.

How Cream French Bulldogs Gained Popularity

Cream French Bulldogs gained popularity in the 1950s because Amanda West brought her Cream Frenchies to multiple shows and competitions. They gained over 500 group wins, 111 wins for being the best in the show, and 21 breed wins in Westminster.

From that moment, Cream Frenchies became more popular in the showroom, making the interest in these puppies rise.

Formal Recognition of Cream French Bulldogs

When it comes to formal recognition of Cream French Bulldogs, the first club that recognized the breed was the French Bulldog Club of England in 1902. The American Kennel Club accepted the breed in 1911, although they recognize only nine colors—one of which is the Cream Frenchie.

Does a Cream French Bulldog Make a Good Pet?

Cream French Bulldogs make excellent pets. Although many people connect this color with potential health problems, the truth is that they aren’t prone to any different problems than any other French Bulldog.

Cream French Bulldogs are tiny, meaning they won’t need much space to feel comfortable, so you can own this pet even if you live in an apartment. Also, due to their size, you can take them everywhere with you, which is convenient when traveling.

This color is adorable because it contrasts with the dark eyes and nose, making these Frenchies popular. However, their color makes them prone to sunburn, which is something to have in mind during summer. Also, like every other French Bulldog, they can be prone to breathing difficulties and strokes because of their flat face.

Although this may sound alarming, it’s typical for all Frenchies, so there’s no need to worry if you provide your Cream French Bulldog with the necessary care and maintenance.
