lots of walking

Although not a leash free dog park, poop bags and trash cans are readily available. There is plenty of walking paths - part paved, part dirt. Just this January (2008) they did a lot of vegetation clearing, which is safer for fires, but now there isn't much shade - in warm weather, Santee gets pretty hot. (Before the vegetation clearing the shade kept it quite comfortable even in the summer - but I rather be less fire hazard)

leash free???

This beautiful park has plenty of lawn area for humans and dogs to enjoy themselves - and beautiful views of San Diego's beaches. Its a little small if your dog likes "walking" and most of the dogs are off leash, even though it is NOT a leash free park.

off leash dog run + shopping

I had the pleasure of going to Otay Ranch Town Center around christmas with my aunty. This off leash dog run is part of the new dog friendly shopping center. Dogs are not allowed in the stores, but your humans can do some shopping and there are doggy water bowls in front of almost everystore. The off leash area is a bit small compared to some San Diego parks, but gives us four-leggers an opportunity to run free and play with others.

Nice "getaway" in the middle of the city

This is a nice little park on the side of busy Fletcher Parkway - it has grass areas for sports and restrooms, and a dirt trail through some trees - you would almost think you are in the mountains if it werent' for the traffic noise. I give it 4 paws only because it's a bit small for an active dog.

Beautiful Park - Dogs must be on leash

This is a beautiful park that offers grass lawn areas and dirt trails. It's fairly centrally located, just west of Mission Valley and allows dogs on leashes.

no fence

This "dog park" is a nice size, with trees, bushes, etc - but no fence. If you have a dog that is not good off leash or likes to "hunt" this is probably not for you - it backs up to a fairly large "wild" area.

nice groomer - super clean dog

The groomer here is very nice - she seems very knowledgable about the animals and Kiba always returned looking and smelling great! Unfortunately, he doesn't like to be separated from his people much and the stress of being bathed caused him to act up a bit. Also, they seem to have cats there on a regular basis in close proximity with the dogs, so if your dog doesn't like cats, it might not be the best solution for you.

good for squirrel lovers

This is a nice clean park - dogs must be leashed and share a paved road with walkers and bikers around the lake. There are also dirt areas with many squirrels and some rabbits and ducks and geese near the water.

HUGE fenced leash free

Fiesta Island is one of the biggest leash free-fenced places for dogs. There is tons to explore - large flat grassy area on top, surrounded by road and then the beach below. Sometimes there are even horses to sniff. There are trash cans and even poo bags available - the only thing is there are no human restrooms (port-o-pot outside the dog area) no benches or fountains. For dogs that love to run or explore or get dirty it's great!

original OB dog wash

This self serve dog wash is convenient as it is located very close to OB dog beach, a place where your dog gets very dirty and it opens early - 7am. The staff does a great job keeping it clean despite that every bathtub is usually in use. Everything you need is included: bathtub, shampoo, towels. Bathtubs have access from both sides and steps built in on one end. However, for difficult bathers that are large dogs I don't recommend it. You "secure" your dog by tieing him to a pipe hanging over the tub and the dog has multiple access points to "escape" Otherwise a very nice place.

comparable wash-your-own-dog, excellent for difficult bathers

For the most part, wash-your-own-dog facilities are fairly comparable in price and what they offer. Standard bath is $12, the building is always clean and the staff friendly. For difficult bathers, this is THE best. 1. The bathtubs are against the wall, allowing only one side for escape. 2. (almost)Any size dog can be secured in the tub with the ring mounted directly to the wall 3. rollaway stairs get your big dog in, but doesn't provide permanent escape 4. "hydrosurge" sprays water and soap on your dog easily and makes washing FAST. your $12 include shampoo, conditioner, towels, wash cloth, "bathing brush" - you can choose from about 6 shampoos and 2-3 conditioners. also available at extra charge: nail trimming, blower, groomer. frequent visitor plan rewards you with a free bath after 10 (I think) Overall, great place!

Large variety

This is one of 2 pet stores we frequent. This store has just about everything you need in one location and the staff are friendly and helpful. (when we first got Kiba, we were going to the store almost every other day) The biggest advantage of this pet store is it is open later than any other pet store in our area - 10PM!!! They also have grooming services which we have used before. They do a nice job - Kiba always came back fluffy, smelling good and with his feet trimmed neatly. But we found that Kiba can be difficult to groom and have opted to do it ourself these days. Since there is a variety of groomers on staff, you can't be certain to get the same service each time.

Yummmmy treats

This a great bakery just for your beloved pets - items are made fresh on location. Many delicious varieties of biscuits to choose from and "bakery counter" with doggy cookies and cannelonis! (doggy ice cream available too) Pets welcome inside the bakery - Kiba really enjoyed these treats and the people were really friendly to him too!

medium size pet store with unique products

This store may not be the biggest pet store, but still offers variety of items you would be looking for your cat or dog. It's the only pet store we found that sells "Wellness" food. And Kiba always get chicken treats from the friendly staff when he goes in there.

Nice clean beach, big surf

This beach seems a lot cleaner than OB dog beach, but not as big(one strip of flat beach to run on) There are many bag dispensers on the walk to the beach, but we never found the "foot bath/fountain"

more to do outside of dog run

This is a nice dog park, many regulars and relatively well behaved dogs. There are 3 runs to choose from, 1 small dog and 2 mixed. If your dog prefers, you can take a walk (on leash) around the park and look for gophers in the grassy area or rabbits in the dirt trail. Park is open from dawn to dusk and water fountains are located right outside the dog run(altho, there are many bowls inside the run)

Now Fully fenced - large park

EDIT: as stated by others, this park is now fully fenced. Ever since we found out it is fully fenced we have been going on a regular basis. Large grassy area, many dogs to play with, soon a water fountain - and if you get bored of playing with other dogs, you can hunt squirrels outside the dog run. "Balboa Park" has many trees to keep it shady and cool.

This is a nice park, it has a large grassy area for all size dogs to play. However, there is only a fence on the street side, the side going into the canyon is not fenced - so if you don't trust your dog to return to you, its probably not the best place for you.

Good terrain, nice amenties

This is a nice new dog run - the fences are sturdy, it includes, grass, trees, a level graveled entry with water fountains and benches. The Run area is somewhat hilly and includes trees that dogs enjoy sniffing. Dog run is split in small and large dog areas.

Large Shelter, Many pets to choose from

This is a large shelter with too many pets needing homes. The staff are friendly and helpful and the facility is relatively clean. Unfortunately, like many of underfunded animal shelters, cages are small and the dogs don't get out as much as they would like. The facility is relatively clean on most of my visits and they seem to be converting the cat area to fewer - larger areas with groups of cats. Overall a good shelter with too many good pets needing homes - many times purebred dogs can be found here!

Wonderful New facility

Wonderful new facility with a large waiting area (so dogs and cats don't need to be close together) - includes "Retail Boutique", televisions, adoption center, adoption info on 1 screen. Friendly doctors and staff. Facility also operates as 24 hour emergency hospital.

Largest off-leash dog park in SD

This is one of the largest fenced off-leash dog parks we've been to. This is ONE large fenced area - no separation for small and large dogs. All the people and dogs we met were friendly and after it rains there is a "pond" for water lovers to play in. :)

Great Boarding alternative for active dogs

Alpine Dog Ranch is a great alternative for active dogs. Dogs get to run free on 4-fenced-acres all day. Thomas is very nice and seems very knowledgable about dogs and their care.
