k9 connection is a pilot project of OPCC (formerly the Ocean Park Community Center) of Santa Monica, California. k9 connection brings the magic of dogs and kids together. At-risk 12- to 18-year-old kids train homeless shelter dogs in basic obedience, assisting the dogs to develop the skills to become adoptable. k9 connection empowers high-risk youth to apply the lessons they teach the dogs to their own lives: to develop an awareness of the risks of uncontrolled and impulsive behavior, and to believe in the power of positive reinforcement as an alternative to force and violence. k9 connection aids teenagers in becoming responsible community members by focusing on goal setting, personal accountability, and personal motivation.

I've encountered many rescue groups. This one is the yardstick upon which all others are measured! The gal who runs this group, Rande Levine, is an amazing woman and a wonderful human. All of her volunteers are knowlegable and well informed about the dogs. If they don't know, they'll find out. Everone is there because they want to be and they want to find great, permanent homes for their dogs. I was mostly impressed by how well cared for their dogs are. They are aware of the strengths and weakness of each dog and painstakingly match a dog with their potential family. I would HIGHLY recommend this group if you want a new dog, additional dog, recommending a dog for a friend, etc. We got Annie there and go out of our way to recommend them to everyone who wants a dog!

Our ongoing mission is to match families with their ideal pets and give these special homeless pups a second chance at a great new life. It is staggering to see these beautiful dogs dumped in the shelters or abandoned by their families day after day, year after year. We concentrate on the dogs of our breed (Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, Maltese and small breed mixes) who have ended up on the shelters through no fault of their own. Many of these dogs have critical injuries, require surgery, are senior in age and/or have otherwise been left to die
