Hardy Dog Park is an enclosed, fenced, off-leash dog park that spans 2.16 acres along Hardy Street and Claremont Avenue in the Rockridge District. Slightly out of the way and directly underneath the freeway (Highway 24), it serves as an ideal location for dogs to play in a shaded area and to bark loudly without disturbing the peace. There is also green grass and open space outside of the enclosed dog park, but dogs are to remain on leash once outside of the fenced area of the park. There is off-site and street parking available.

This is a 290 acre open space preserve - a wooded canyon with creek, and trails that climb to views. This trail is popular with walkers and dog walkers. Sometimes you will meet a professional dog walker with a group of dogs. The parking lot to this small network of trails is inside a condo complex on Campus Drive just yards from Keller and Campus Drive, (Keller is an exit off 580) in East Oakland. The lovely creekside trail climbs steadily 2 miles to Merritt Campus (where dogs need to be on leash). There is one trail branching off to the right, where you are rewarded with splendid vistas looking towards Hayward (it joins with Skyline). The other trail branches to the left through a beautiful oak forest, and ends on Campus Drive. Dogs need to be on leash in parking lot area. Dogs will drink from creek so make sure they are vaccinated.

These new dog runs (as of 10/07) are shoved into the back of the park in the available space next to the 580 freeway. The big dog run (over 30#s) has two double-gated entrances -- one from the parking lot and one from behind the amphitheatre -- and runs the length of the 3 tennis courts. This is a plus because there's usually people to watch playing while the pups run madly after the many stray tennis balls that end up back here. There are trees, bushes and benches, but it is really just a run, not very big. The small dog run has one double-gated entrance and it shares the small, very rear fence with the big dog run. There are two large logs for showing off on and a wild bushy area in the back where pups can go hunt for rodents and transients. There are also a couple benches and yard chairs. The small dog run is a bit larger than the big dog run, so I usually use it for my big dogs when there aren't any small dogs in it. There are occasionally biodegradable scoop bags stocked in each area, but usually there are just some extra bags brought by regulars.
