History

:
The Doxle, which is a cross between the Dachshund and the Beagle, originated as one of many "hybrid" dogs that became popular during the late 1990s. Many of these canines were praised for being hypoallergenic and (supposedly) healthier than purebred canines. According to some dog enthusiasts, the Doxle's energy and heartiness come from "hybrid vigor," which is when a healthier dog results from the mating of two purebreds.

The Look of the Doxle

:
Some people describe the Doxle as looking like a longish Beagle with short, Dauchshund-like legs. Because this is a hybrid dog—bred from two distinct purebreds—a variety of looks and colors can be found. Usually, the Doxle has a small, slightly rounded head with a long muzzle, dark eyes and thin, pendant ears. Its saber-like tail either curls slightly or hangs low. Sometimes, the Doxle’s coat has a Beagle-like pattern; sometimes it has a solid color.

What They're Like to Live With

:
Doxles are livelydogs that form strong bonds with their families. They like to feel involved with the household, craving lots of attention and playtime to feel complete. Vigorous but gentle, Doxles are great playmates for children. Sometimes they can be mellow, hanging around the house and going with the flow. Other times, Doxles can be full of energy.

Always up for a walk, run or a game in the park, Doxles can easily get bored when left to their own devices for long stretches of time. Sometimes, that can involve chewing things. Protective of their environments without being aggressive with strangers, Doxles will bark if a suspicious person approaches the home, making them small but effective guard dogs—ideal for the city.

Things You Should Know

:
Most Doxles can live as long as 16 years. Being a hybrid breed, they suffer from few genetic health issues. It's still a good idea to regularly inspect the Doxle’s ears, feet and eyes for signs of infection. Also remember to schedule regular health visits based on a veterinarian's advice.

The Doxle comes from sturdy, hunting stock, but due to its longish body it should be handled with care. Like the Dachshund, it could develop back problems or have a hard time hopping down stairs.

Doxles make excellent apartment pets, but daily walks are needed to satisfy their natural curiosity and exercise needs. If you can provide the Doxle with the occasional romp in a protected outdoor area, by all means do. Grooming the Doxle is fairly easy. Just brush its coat every week and give it the occasional bath.
