What They're Like to Live With

:
Chiweenies combine the protectiveness of the Chihuahua with the energy and curiosity of the Dachshund. A loyal, cute and lovable pal, the Chiweenie will want to keep very close, burrowing into the covers or snuggling tight on the couch. This dog can be sensitive. It tends to bond with its owner and may have trouble living with other (bigger) pets. However, if socialized with other animals and people at an early age, it will get along find with just about anybody.

The Chiweenie is playful in the yard—always up for fetch or a few rounds of wrestling. It makes an excellent companion to children and the elderly. Very vocal, the Chiweenie will let you (or anybody else) know if the play gets too rough or if a midday snack is needed. For an apartment dog, you can hardly do better than a Chiweenie.

Things You Should Know

:
Chiweenies love walks around the block and games in the yard. Sometimes their little legs can get tired during a walk, in which case they might need to be carried home. Being light and cuddly, however, this is always an easy task. However, remember that they can be delicate. The Chiweenie is ideally suited to apartment living.

Grooming the Chiweenie is super-easy. Brush its smooth, short coat weekly and bathe occasionally. The Chiweenie can live a good long life—as long as 16 years. Because it is a hybrid breed, it suffers from few genetic health issues. Inspect the Chiweenie’s ears, feet and eyes for signs of infection, and schedule regular health visits based on a veterinarian’s advice.

History

:
The Chiweenie, which is a cross between the Chihuahua and the Dachshund, originated as one of many hybrid dogs that became popular during the late 1990s. Many of these canines were praised for being hypoallergenic and (supposedly) healthier than purebred canines. According to some breeders, the Chiweenie's upbeat attitude and energy comes from "hybrid vigor," which is when a healthier dog results from the crossing of two purebreds.

The Look of the Chiweenie

:
Some people describe the Chiweenie as a long Chihuahua, which is not too far off the mark. Chiweenies have small, long frames usually covered in short coats that can come in black, tan, black & tan and other color combinations. The color and length of coat depends upon the look of the purebred parents. The Chiweenie usually has a delicate, rounded head with hanging ears and those distinctively cute, round, Chihuahua-like eyes.
