Oh there is a reason. In their book How to be Your Dog's Best Friend, the Monks of New Skete have illustrations of dogs' ear positions and what they mean. Depending, it could be submission, fear, or aggression.

You can also check out a book called "How to Speak Dog." It also shows the different ear positions, tail positions, body positions, different barks, etc. Good to educate yourself and interesting too!
